My asus desktop with windows vista will not start up. I keep getting a black screen that tells me reboot and select proper boot device or insert media? What is wrong?

It means your system is trying to boot from somewhere other than your hard drive. Make sure you don't have a CD in the CD/DvD Drive. Also when you boot your system pay close attention to which key it says you can hit to change the boot sequence or boot order and which key it says you can select to go into the Bios or Setup. Boot the system the go into the BIOS or Setup. Go to the tab that allows you to select your boot order. Make sure your Hard Drive is selected as the first boot device. Try rebooting after saving and making this change.

Reboot happens only when U are connected online?
Hint: There might be a spyware or adaware.
Try downloading: Lavasoft.com the free version and clean u-r pc.
Or any other: System Suite, Fix-it Utilities, System Mechanic, etc.
Personal choice: I would reinstall the O.S.
