Hi Ricky welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Do you know if your model number starts with 106, 919, or 921? Also is it an upright stationary or a horizontal portable compressor? I am pretty sure you have the Century 6 Hp motor. (Obsolete FYI) but I will try and find the correct capacitor. IF you do have the Century electric motor... it is going to be a long search.

Normally a Craftsman model number would be 106.xxxxyyyy or 919.yyyyxxxx that information would be very helpful.

Ricky the replacement start capacitor can be found here:

However.... I still need to find the mfd value for a 6 hp motor. Still researching.

I forgot to ask..... is this 115VAC or 230VAC? It will make a difference in the Start Cap.

Your actually going to need a 400 - 488 MFD capacitor to start your compressor. A good rule of thumb is 80 MFD per HP and with most capacitors having a 20% tolerance the 400 - 480 MFD starting capacitor will work for you.

    Here is the kicker.... a 115VAC motor will need a 165VAC capacitor, A 230 VAC motor will need a 250 - 320 VAC Capacitor

    For the 230VAC capacitor:

    http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-...

    For the 115-125VAC capacitor:

    http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-...

Just note the size of the case... this is a large capacitor. You may need a smaller one.

Usually a start capacitor fails big time because there is a pr0blem with the centrifugal flyweight start swtich inside the motor.

Hi Ricky I note the cap did not correct the problem. As I said before most often start Caps fail because there is another problem in the motor. If you get a chance look at the start switch. Some times the just need a spring or some lubrication. If it tossed one of the flyweights you have to replace it. Read this article again:

Hope you can bring this one back to life.

My Craftsman compressor is about 15 yrs old. One of the two capacitors is: Mallory
400-480MFD 16vac
52A103937-1
235-9621-01A

It is my understanding that this is the START, but I am not 100% sure

Clarke AC 2001 Pancake Compressor. It needs the correct capacitor. I bought one at Grainger and it started to blow smoke.

You don't need the exact capacitor. You need one that is for AC and meets the minimum requirement OR more. So you can use a larger cap as long as it fits under the cover. On Craigslist you can find old compressors of the same type that are worn out and get the part that way. Get the information of the cap and email various online electrical component places. It will say voltage, and capacitance rated in microfarad aka uF so 120v 4800uF. etc.

Be sure that you have diagnosed the underlying problem as capacitors don't just wear out. So the Granger one might still be correct but the underlying problem that burned out the original is probably the real problem.

Finally, if you need to run ANY compressor for and extended amount of time place a house fan next to it and consider removing the plastic cover. I ran a sears compressor for over 2 hours with this method 20 years ago and to this day it still works! Keep it cool!

Heat Pump, "open start circuit"

Yes it is the start up on the compressor and then the other capacitor is the run cap after the start up. You need to replace the 45mfd cap

I have a 25 year old Ruud A/C. The outdoor fan isn't turning and I can hear the condensor humming. There are 2 capacitors in the the electronics box that the schematic says are running capacitors. ...

The 3 microferad capacitor goes to the fan motor. The bigger one goes to the compressor. If the capacitor is swollen or pregnant looking it is shorted and needs to be changed. If it has discharged oil it has shorted out. If you can't read the mfd (microferad) you can go by the rated tonnage of the air cond for rule of thumb.

2 ton condenser = 25mfd capacitor
3 ton condenser= 35 mfd capacitor
4 ton condenser= 45 mfd
5 ton = 55 mfd

again, this is rule of thumb but should get your unit running again.

How do i replace the start capacitor on my furnace in the attic?

There actually is no start capacitor in the furnace, but there is usually a run capacitor. The run capacitor is mounted on the blower housing. Turn the power off to the furnace and remove the blower door. Look back at the actual blower motor and follow at least one brown wire to a metalic oval. That metalic oval is the capacitor. Remove the wires and make a note of how it is wired and install a new capacitor of the same microfarad value. The microfarad value is marked something like 5mfd or 5uF (it may be 3, 5, 7.5, 10, or 15 microfarads. Make sure to use the right one or you can cause failure to the motor.
