Error code 388

Error Code: 386, 387, 388, 389, 390, 391, 392, 393, 394, 395 Definition

There is too much noise on the line for a valid connection between two fax machines to complete. The noise problem might go away over time.

Solution

Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.

Brother MFC 3360 C can not send fax.It show "sending" ....thats all never finished.

When my fax machine does this, it prints out an error code. Most of the times it's "Poor transmission" or "Bad line". I can duplicate the problem by trying to fax out on my VoIP line instead of my regular land line.

Anymore today, it's usually easier to scan and email the document. I can e-fax the scan if I'm sending it to someone without an email address.

The fax appears to dial the number successfully. The receiving fax is turned on. It apprears to try for a long time. The error report says "no answer."

It is not your fax line is the other party.did you try any other number?
Post back.

Solution one: Perform a fax line test Perform a fax line test to check whether the fax line is properly connected. Step one: Run a Fax Test
  1. Press the Setup button (c01395353.jpg ) on the product control panel.
  2. Use the Arrow keys (c01073166.jpg ) to select Service , select Fax Service , select Run Fax Test , and then press OK . The Fax Test prints.
    • If the report passes, try to resend the fax.
    • If the report fails with the message 'Fail - the phone line is not active,' plug the cable into a working telephone jack, and then try to resend the fax.
    • If the report fails with the message 'Fail - the cord is in the wrong port,' continue to 'Step two: Change the cable to the correct port.'
Step two: Change the cable to the correct port Make sure the telephone cable is inserted in the correct port. Remove the cord for the fax line from the port labeled with a telephone, and then insert it into the correct port. Figure 1: Fax portsc01756259.gif Scanner error message The message 'Scanner error ' displays on the product control panel while sending a fax. Solution: Check paper size This product only supports paper less than 381 mm (15 in). Use only letter, A4, or legal sized paper for sending faxes. To send this fax, copy or print the original document onto shorter paper, and then resend.

This isn't limited to Brother, but we have a customer who is claiming their fax machine was "brought down" by one of our transmissions to their fax machine. The repair person told them they...

I only have 27 years in the office equipment service business but I can tell you that I have never heard of such a thing. Also my back ground in Electronics tells me that it is impossible to damage a circuit board using a digital transmission over a phone line. Could the phone line itself cause it? Possibly, but certainly not your fax transmission itself.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Brother 560 fax machine

If you hook a regular telephone up to the line, and try to make a call, do you hear static? or low voice or tone? The line itself could be bad, or the wiring int he phone plug in the wall could be lose. If that's the case u can unscrew the plug form the wall and make sure all the wires are good. Other then that all you can do is have the phone company come test your phone line, and/or get a new fax machine., but most likely it is your phone line and not the fax machine.

I'm getting an error mesage: ECM error on my Sharp AR-M207 fax machine. How can I fix it?

ECM (Error Correction Mode) is a feature common in most fax machines today. It helps to minimize errors while transmitting faxes over noisy phone lines.

1) Be sure you have the latest version of the drivers installed
2) Turn the fax off, then unplug for 10 minutes, turn on and try again. This should clear up anything in the printer/fax memory
3) Check if your phone line is unsually noisy when you tried to send the fax(es) that gave you the error message. If this is the case, a sucessful fax transmission will be almost impossible. You may have a faulty phone line or an improper installation. Either of these two should be fixed by your phone company. Also, most phoen companies can test your phone line (for fre) remotely to check for abnormally high noise levels.

Please, report back if you need further assistance.

NEED THE MACHINE TO ANSWER WHEN THE PHONE SENDS THE SIGNAL.

After making my post, I went to the official Brothers website for the 4100 FAQs and "Operating Instructions." Here's what I found. Set your 4100 set to the "Fax/Tel" mode. Press "Menu", then the number 2 (Fax), then number 1(Set-up Receive), then number 1 again (Ring Delay). Use right arrow key to increase. Once increased, press the "Set" key. You'll see the message "Accepted." Now press the "Stop" key to exit "Menu." This will now give you up to 4 rings before the fax auto answers. Inorder to send a signal by phone to remote start the fax just follow the instructions I copied directly from Brothers instructions for the 4100: If you answer the call on an extension phone (this is any phone plug into a phone jack on the same line) and hear a beep every 3 seconds (automatic fax) or just silence (manual fax), press *51(remote activation code) on the telephone keypad, wait to hear the Brother machine turn on (chirping sounds) and then hang up. I don't have anyone that can send me a fax right now to test it out. I'll have to try it in the morning. Hope this works for you.

I need help with a fax machine

Sounds like you may have a noisy phone line, incorrectly set transmission level or no filters installed if using broadband adsl service, also pick up phone is it free of any background noise or crackles? (tel phone company or cable problem if noisy)

In australia there is a service for test fax level across phone line called FOLDS (Fax online diag service) maybe your carrier have one too so you can test?
