The most common problem is the capacitors blowing. This is the round (usually white in colour) barrell shaped device usually found in the end cap of the alternator. It will have two wires attatched to two of four pins. I would advise that you check the voltage at the end of the alternator first to eliminate a wiring problem. The capacitor can only be tested with the correct equipment but changing it should solve your problem- 75% sure.

I had the same problem on my Powermate 525500 (5500 watt) and finally manage to get in contact w/Powermate (PRAMAC) tech support. He told me that if the gen is setup for a while, the exciter loses it's magnatism. To reenergize ( jumpstart) as he called it, follow the prcedure below. Probably not for amatures.
1. start up the generator.
2. Pull off the brush cover on the end of the gen.
3. Get a 6-12 volt battery and setup w/color coated cables.
4. place the negative lead on the left side brush terminal and tap the right side brush terminal w/ the positive lead.
5. Wala....you sould have power.

One would think that this important info would be on the manual or a blog somewhere.

Good luck and have a wonderful day.

SOURCE: Hello I have a coleman

I can't get a wiring diagram or a manual without the model. type, and code off the engine.
What I can do is describe the usual wiring and see of that helps.

The ones I've worked on have a very simple wiring harness,
a black wire runs down into the front of the engine, this is the kill wire that attaches to the ignition module (coil), the other end of the kill wire connects to the center terminal of the on/off switch.
A white wire runs from the switch to the oil shutdown module, at the switch it's connected to the terminal that's closed when in the run position. The other switch terminal connects to a wire that runs to the frame ground. The gray wire from the oil sensor module connects to the oil sensor on the side of the engine.
That's pretty much all of the wiring there is for an engine that doesn't have electric start.

Rate me please,
Carl

SOURCE: Coleman Powermate 5000 no electricity, runs fine

Hello;
Take a look at your outlets. Some of these units use pretty cheap outlets and short out. You will know if it is bad when you look at it. Hope this helps.
Thanks;

SOURCE: My coleman powermate generator will start but will not generate.

The voltage regulator controls the output. You will need to check that first.

I have an old coleman powermate 6560 . Its missing the spark plug (which got thrown away) and i can't find ANYTHING on what spark plug to use in this generator.model number is PM0645250

The J8 spark plug is typically used on almost all small motors. You can google J8 cross reference for a list of alternatives that will work.

I am looking for an owners manual for a Coleman Powermate generator model PMO645250

Powermate doesn't have an owners manual listed for the PM0645250 on their website.

Since wintertime is a good candidate for power failures I would recommend using a good synthetic 5w-30 oil as it is a good year around oil. This would make starting much easier during the cold weather

I purchased a Coleman Powermate 5000 6 years ago: Ser: 94411583. Never really used it for any length of time. Kept for emergency. An electrician checked it for voltage output a short time ago. 240V...

Voltage is adjusted by raising or lowering the engine speed (governor adjustment), however one must also pay attention to the rpm because your generator was designed to produce 120 volts at 60 cycles while turning 3600 rpm. Your electrician should have tested for htz while testing for voltage. I would recommend re-testing under load and adjust governor to turn 60 cycles to see resulting voltage.

Coleman Powermate Powerbase 4000 -no AC Need Field test procedur

Check the voltage sent to the field when running. It will probably be around 12 volts. You can try connecting a lantern battery BRIEFLY to the field to re-magnetize the field. Try bothe polarites.

Some have had a bad rectifier and one had a bad transformer that generaates the low voltage from the generated output. He had a broken wire from the winding to the wire from the transformer. He was able to reconnect the failed solder joint.

I'm reading 130VAC on the output. Can this be

It should read 115v-120v with full load. Yes, you can slow the engine down just a little, depending on the engine, there will be a high rpm adjustment. 130v with full speed, no load, is really not too bad.

Coleman 5500 watt output unbalanced

Get on their website and get the wiring diagrams. They should also have the resistances of the windings. Checking these resistances, may indicate a stator problem. Give the model number and it will be easier to help.
