Hi! I am having a hard time to make work my PS3 with the Pioneer vsx 818 receiver. This would be the first time to see and hear a blueray but,..... just doesn't work. I went thru on the user guide, understood well, the HDMI via doesn't support audio.( I am wondering what was the purpose to invent it ?) PS3 has only one HDMI output and one optical. I connected my HDMI to the receiver, picture goes in ,comes out to my flat screen but no sound.Cool..... I have tried to communicate with the receiver(It was suggested by the user guide) but nothing I could seen on my screen.Cool..... Disconnected the receiver, I am going directly in the flat screen . Well, I have picture and sound on my flat screen.Try to use the optical from PS3 to the receiver( 2 input,...marked TV and CD) Plugged in and selected with the source selector each time, still nothing. Cool. I am wondering maybe I should go back to university and take a few semester on how to connect things because I just ran out of ideas. I still remember the old times then Pioneer use to built user friendly electronics. This time they really screwed it up. They should keep it on mind when it is about to design a system , I just want to use it,without knowing what does what and why? Today, we just don't have the time anymore for this kind of surprises. So,please tell me, after all this lost time, is there anything else I should try? Or just scratch it, and loose all my faith in Pioneer for good. Thanks for your time. Andrew

I fixed it myself. Didn't realize that I loosened speaker cables on the wall panel when I moved the receiver and two were touching...

SOURCE: I am trying to connect

Hi,

There is no dedicated DVD/LD "HDMI" port on your receiver. I would guess this is your problem.

The (DVD/LD) IN 1 port is for component A/V cables. There are 3 HDMI sockets (2 IN, 1 OUT) directly above the DVD/LD port. Therefore, you are not going to get any response from the receiver if you set the input source to DVD/LD when you are using an HDMI cable.

I need to make sure we are working on the same definitions here before we go any further. Are you using a component type cable (3 video + 2 Audio plugs on each end) or an actual HDMI cable, like this:

http://www.corcomputers.com/images/AGIKBAB133-HDMI-MM.jpg

There seems to be a lot of confusion over HDMI cables. A component cable will carry an HD signal, but it is not an HDMI cable. HDMI refers exclusively to the cable type in the image above.

I can definitely help you to get this working, but I need to make sure we are on the same page before doing so. Some Pioneer receivers have the HDMI ports disabled at the factory and they need to be re-enabled by the user.

If you can let me know which cable type you are actually using, we should be able to sort this fairly quickly.

Regards,
BElectric

SOURCE: No picture through Pioneer VSX

Your receiver has 2 HDMI in with one HDMI out, 3 Component in and one out, and two difital optical in. If the bluray player has HDMI out this woukd be your best bet because HDMI carries the audio and video. If it has Component out, you would have to provde sound through the digital optical. Not knowing what blueray player or kind of tv you have, it's hard to advise so I may be over explaining. Anyway, we've touched on the bluray player to receiver. Out of your three HDMI slots on your receiver only one is HDMI out so make sure you're in the right one. Idaelly you have a DVD/blueray in on your receiver so on your receiver you would select "DVD" when playing. If your hook up is correct you may have to try another HDMI cable to test.

NO AUDIO

If it is the radio you are trying to get make sure you have an antenna that is strong enough and can receive the signal. With a digital tuner it requires a strong enough signal to capture any channels.

Sub woofer

Hello,
The subwoofer is totally independent from your Pioneer VSX-D412. You can check if it works like you did with a finger on the hot point of the RCA cable (not very good test, as you will hear noise and can't say if that means it works OK) or better connect a known receiver to the speaker connections in the sub and test to see if it’s working properly.
Regarding the receiver, you may not have enabled the VSX to output to the sub. Read the manual on how to check for that. Only Dolby Digital 5.1 signals will allow the sub out, in a receiver of this level. It normally will not let you use the sub in stereo mode. Some more complex units will allow you that, but I believe not this model.
Good luck
