Here is a link to the service manual for the 6003 http://www.arizonaexpressionz.com/elna_service/6003_service_manual.pdf - these manuals are written for trained technicians but it might give your husband an idea of what is involved before he decides whether he would tackle the repair.

If you are in the USA then you might be able to source parts from www.sewusa.com, www.sewingpartsonline.com or a local Elna dealer.

I've always been happy to take my Elna to my OSMG (Old sewing machine guy) Ken as he's worked on Elnas for 25 years and I appreciate his knowlege and experience with them.

My jones sewing machine wont stitch straight just zig zag tried moving parts

Probably the zig-zag mechanism has seized from lack of oil/cleaning. Pick up fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube and apply a couple drops every place where metal rubs against metal (including the zig-zag mechanism). Do NOT oil any rubber or leather parts (belts)!!!

Then apply heat from a handheld hairdryer. Repeat until it loosens.

When making buttonholes, the machine will not zig zag in reverse when doing the right side of the buttonhole.

1. Remove the top.
2. Clean the inside with carburetor cleaner and lubricate with sewing machine oil.
3. While After this move the stitch length back and forth from a long arm to the reverse mode. Rotate the hand wheel several times to lubricate all moving parts.
4. Place some rags under the pressure foot and watch if the rags will back up.
5. Remove the bottom of the machine.
6. Clean the bottom moving parts and lubricate.
7. Rotate the hand wheel and watch the feed dogs to see if everything is moving.
8. It is possible to notice a screw attached to the stitch length adjuster that will have to be tightened. This may require you to move other parts that are attached and apply pressure while doing this.

Step motor error

One of the stepper motors has failed. The machine has two stepper motors: one that moves the needle back and forth and one that moves the feed. Take it to your dealer for an estimate.

The zag part of zig zag won't work

i believe your machine is skipping the stitch on the RIGHT side as you sew and this is normally a timing problem. Lower your needle about 1/16 inch and try it . It might work to finish your project but it will need to be serviced to have the timing corrected.
