Started geting service required message
Service Required means that your 8500 has repeatedly failed while attempting to calibrate its radar antenna. This can be fixed by Escort for free if your RD still is in warranty. There is a service fee if your RD is out of warranty, but at least Escort will fully test everything in addition to repairing your 8500, and they will upgrade your 8500's firmware to whatever their latest and greatest firmware is which may help to improve sensitivity, reduce false alerts, or to detect newer laser gun models.
For 'Service Required', cooling off the unit only may not work. You may need to 'Rest' the unit. You need to hold all three buttons down on the unit and then plug it in. Once it goes through its bootup sequence, you can let the buttons go. Remember, this will reset any settings you previously had and you will need to redo them.
I had the same problem take out the 3 screws on the bottom, take the unit apart , the metal horn type thing is the antenna, take out the 4 screws the antenna comes apart you will see a circuit board clean with rubbing alcohol , clean the other circuit boards , put the unit back together and it should work fine, mine did and has been working fine for about 3 months now, without one service required message
My problem always happens when i turn the unit on, not while already riding/driving out of the blue
i believe the problem might be from the unit getting hot from being in a car, or on a motorcycle, or in a jacket in the hot sun then powering it up while still very hot, some kind of overheat circuit
find a way to cool it off, ride a short distance with it turned off then turn it on or...
also take the 8500 in you right hand and tap it in you left hand 3-5 times, it should start up and be fine. this doesn't have anything to do with temperature but i've had luck with it

I have the same problem
Well I live in Wisconsin.. My escort 8500 worked fine, then I had it sitting for 6 months. Brought it out today and it tried to calibrate for awhile, now it just says service required. I'm in the cold, around 0 degress F, so I don't think heat has much to do with it.
Same problem as above, mine has been sitting idol for a month in the car at 32 degrees or below at times. Service required message appears. So does anyone know how to fix it now that we see that it happens alot.
I bought one off ebay. It worked fine for the first day. Now i tried turning it on and it tried to calibrate for about 5 mins and now it says service required. I switched its settings from "auto" to "highway" and now it works fine, but i would like to know its fully functional no matter what settings i have it on.
If you take the alloy trumpet looking antenna appart there is a small brass screw connecting the two little circuit together take it out clean it and put it back in as it probably has vibrated a bit loose
