The first thing to ask is, did you turn the camera on? I ask this because some devices automatically power up when they're connected, however it's likely that your camera needs to be actually switched on as well as being plugged in. The difference is that those other devices are powered/charged from the USB whereas your camera is not.
If that wasn't the answer, then you have to find out which of the three possibilities (USB port ' USB cable ' Camera) is not working.
Start with the USB port. Plug any device you have handy into it and check that it works; a memory stick is probably easiest. Any good? If not, the port is your problem, try another.
Try a different cable. Hmmm. yes, that's hard. The thing about USB cables is that if they fit, they're compatible, so you only have to find one that actually fits. Check your own devices, you may have one. Ask your friends... failing that you may have to get one to test out. Any good? Obviously if it works, the cable was the problem.
And if it's not the USB port, and it's not the cable, then unfortunately it must be the camera.
As you plug in the camera and turn it on, watch your computer for activity... it's possible that it's connecting, but doing nothing. Go to your device manager and look around - does it appear anywhere? If it's connecting but not set up to download pictures, then we have a slightly different problem.
