I upgraded my operating system to Windows Vista and lost the audio output device. How can I get my sound back?

Have you made sure that your dell computer is compatible with windows vista before upgradeing if not compatible you will have to reload it with windows xp

that means that u need to update the sound driver to be compatible with the new windows u upgraded to, or better u might need to perform a system restoration to go back to where u are before the upgrade.

If you just upgraded to Vista then you need to update your audio drivers.
go into the device manager and expand the sound, video and game controllers tree and update the audio driver for your audio device

its a known issue --if you u upgrade vista home to vista ultimate.just u need to uninstall the audio driver and install it again

go to start - control panel - system and maintenance - system - device manager, locate your sound card and uninstall your sound drivers, rebbot the computer and vista should reinstall them for you and they should work again

It is most likely you have a device that needed a special installation of a driver in order for it to work. The most logical solution in this case would be to reinstall your audio driver from the disc the driver is contained on.

Also, check Windows Update to see if a sound driver is offered as an optional update.

NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED

windows key + R = open : devmgmt.msc
Sounds, video and game controlers > (right click) Realtek high definition audio > update driver sofware > browse my computer for driver software > let me pick from a list...> double click on Realtek high definition audio > YES to update driver warning > AND SWEET SOUND IS AUDIBLE :D
