Cd/DVD drive has stopped working

Hi

I have a Acer Aspire 5720z and lately got vista uninstalled and got XP on but now my DVD drive won't read properly It reads and plays CDs fine but if I put in a DVD it makes noises like it's trying really hard to find something on the disc but doesn't work. It's not the disc because it works on other computers so can you help???

    I bought this computer from my friend, and to make a long story short, ended up installing windows on it again. My CD/DVD drive will read CD's, but not DVD's. I'm assuming I need a driver or something. Help, please!

If the button on the side of your laptop will not open the drive then you can try two things.

1. click start at the bottom left of your desktop (7 and vista will be a windows logo) then click computer. A list of hard drives and cd/dvd drives will show up. hover over the dvd drive with your mouse and right click. Then click eject, the tray should open.

2.Get a paper clip. located on your dvd drve cover is a small hole just big enough to fit a paper clip in. Push the paper clip in and pull it out it should pop open the drive.

Replace a cd/dvd drive on my Laptop
Not possible at all. To install XP or Vista again, you need a CD/DVD drive working. (or) Contact Aspire(or local technician) if they can ship a XP/Vista pre-installed Hard-disk.

Acer Aspire 5720Z
This is going to be either a driver glitch or a bad drive. Start by uninstalling the drivers for the cd drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the drive and reinstall the drivers automatically. If this doesn't correct the problem, then unfortunately, the drive is bad and will need replaced.
