I have used 30 WT oil in all my 4 cycle engines. You could google Briggs & stratton to get some info. Sears will sell you an operators manual. Try googling Sears, you might get lucky & get the manual for free..

What kind of oil in a22 ton briggs & stratton motor

BRIGGS & STRATTON ENGINES:
For temperatures above 40? F use an SAE30W oil. Using multigrade oil may increase oil consumption. Using SAE 30W oil below 40? F will result in hard starting and possible engine
bore damage. For temperatures below 40 ? F use
an SAE10W-30 or SAE5W-30 oil. Oil capacity for the 6 H.P. engine is approximately 5/8 quart (20 ounces; 0.6 liter).
Refer to Briggs & Stratton engine owner's manual for additional
information.

21 HP briggs & stratton engine burns 6oz of oil & the spark plug is black with oil & carbon there is no smoke from the exhaust

Check in your user manual and see what weight of oil you should use in your engine. If the weight of oil is too low it will let it burn pass the rings and the valves. I use Briggs & Stratton 30 SAE oil in all my engines. If the engine is old you may have to do a valve job or clean the valves and head which do carbon up and need to be cleaned from time to time.

WhaT TYPE OF OIL DOES THE 16.5 HP B&S engine take

Your 16.5 hp Briggs engine takes SAE HD30 weight motor oil. I recommend to use a name brand high quality oil. It should take 48 ounces from a complete drain. If you run this engine when it is cold outside (below freezing) then you can change to a 10W30 oil.
Good luck

Changing oil in Biggs and Stratton engine

Use 10W30 weight oil. The capacity is 1.5 Quarts (48 ounces) with filter change. I highly recommend you use 100% synthetic oil in an air cooled engine. Change the oil and filter every 50 hours of use.

I have a 1977 model 137-495/ 8 hp electric start MTD riding mower with a 38'' cut, my problem is I want to change my oil and I have no idea how much oil I need with the filter.

I take it that the motor is a briggs and stratton?
Briggs makes their own sae 30 weight oil which you can pick up at lowes for 5 bucks or so and it is packaged in a 48oz. container
this is what you need for an oil change and filter,
being this old and 8 horsepower have you located a oil filter?
anyway start with 48oz do you have a screw in dip stick to check your oil or a cap you take off near the base of the motor? if you have a cap you take off then you add oil here until it covers the top of the threads and your done.
if you have a dip stick add 1qt 32oz..then check the level with the dipsticks safe range and adj as needed.
if you cannot find briggs oil then use a reputable brand sae 30 weight

hope this helps you some
