I had that with my Kenmore Ultra Wash. I think is grease from a worn out or rusted out bearing. It also had an orangey stain making me think it was runsted out. I replaced the impeller assembly (cost about $30). Works a little better, but I fear the grease-gunk may have clogged up something else in the works.

I have a buck wood stove and I'm having a issue with smoke coming into the house and a black tar looking substance running down the triple wall pipe appears to be coming out of the seams.

Either your wood isn't dry enough which causes cresote to form in liner of chimney.
Also if the flue liner is not insulated , smoke will turn to cresote /tar when it enters cold chimney.
Clean liner and increase air to firebox this will increase draw up chimney.

Door on Kenmore Dishwasher dropping out pieces of black insulation on the floor and into the dishwasher basin. What is it? Can the insulation be replaced or is it new dishwasher time?

If it seems noisier, these black pieces are pitch (a hard tar-like substance) that's coated on dishwasher doors to make them quieter. Just to be safe, though, it might be a good idea to show them to somebody in an electrical shop.

Have a pellet stove that has been working perfect for years, then last night it shut itself off and when I opened door there was this black tar on everything inside and the windows were also black. I had...

Several of things come to mind: Have you changed the type (Brand) of pellets, recently?
Have you had your chimney (stack) cleaned in the past year? Is the fresh air intake functioning properly? Is the auger feeding to much or to little pellets?

Changing brand of pellets - Not all wood pellets are made the same. If you recently changed brands, you will need to tweak your stove to handle this new brand. This will affect how the auger feeds.

If you chimney (stack) hasn't been cleaned in the past 12 months, it may be partially clogged with creosote and not drawing properly and it is liquefying and running back down the chimney and not allowing for a clean burn. And could cause a chimney fire.

Fresh air intake: If that's not functioning properly, you're getting incomplete combustion. Which will cause the black tar looking substance you described. Couple that with changing brands of pellets and you have a problem.

The above are the first things that came to mind. I hope it steers you in the right direction to troubleshoot the problem. Please let me know.

I ran a full normal cycle and when I opened the dishwasher at the end of the cycle the detergent tablet was laying at the bottom of the dishwasher, so it didn't even use it. Why? What's wrong with the...

It may just be that the little door that holds the detergent didn't open when it was time to do so. Clean the latch and try it several times. It may never occur again.

I have a knocking (5 quick, loud knocks) sound intermittently on my refrigerator. I think it is when the compressor starts up (not 100% sure). I opened the back panel and everything looked normal except...

Chances are that black tar like substance you are seeing if from the capacitor. This is were I would start, as a capacitor is not all that expensive. Make sure it is the same rating as the current capacitor, and be aware that capacitors store electricity. When you disconnect the leads don't cross the terminals with your fingers, or you will get a shock. Hope this helps

We have an LG lds5811ww dishwasher with IE error

check for voltage at the water valve when it should be filling Try disconnecting the Water Valve outlet from the DishWasher and run the output into a bucket if all is well with the valve then remove the door panel and inspect the wires near the bottom of the door. the wires get buried in the tar like insulation causing the wires to break as the door is opened and closed. That tar like substance is one of the worst things they could of ever put into that machine causes the wires to break apart adn become brittle

Can't Open the Washer Door---Our Clothes are held Hoatage

Check and ensure that the tubes and passages to the water level pressure sensor are not blocked by caked detergent, lint , etc.
( this may have caused the water overflow in the first place)
clean up the internal parts that are wetted by the overflow.

clean the door lock mechanism. ( this normally works on a temperature delay mechanism, if cleaning does not work, replace)

all the above done with the power unplugged and water inlets unplugged , of course

Tar-like substance appearing on clothes and washine machine

i havnt seen any flashes on this id look closley at what your putting in the washer as there is nothing in the unit its self as far as mfg that will cause this also try this 1. Open the washer door and remove any clothing or items from the washer.
2. Inspect the gray colored seal/bellow between the door opening and the basket
for stained areas. Pull back the seal/bellow to inspect areas under the seal/bellow.
3. If stained areas are found, wipe down these areas of the bellows using the following
procedure:
a) Mix a dilute solution of liquid chlorine bleach and water (3/4-cup bleach in
1 gallon of warm tap water).
b) Wipe the seal/bellow area with the dilute solution.
c) Let stand 5 minutes.
d) Wipe down area thoroughly with a dry cloth and let the washer interior air dry.
e) Please note:
- Do not use bleach at full strength for cleaning surfaces.
- The use of rubber gloves is recommended when cleaning for prolonged
periods.
4. To begin the clean out cycle, do the following:
a) Open the washer door and remove any clothing or items from the washer.
b) Be sure door is closed.
c) Open the dispenser drawer and remove the detergent divider from the main
wash detergent compartment. See the Use and Care Guide for instructions.
No additives will be added at this time. You will be required to add them at a
later step.
- For Whirlpool Duet, select the “Power” button.
- For Kenmore Elite HE products, move to the next step.
d) Select the “Normal” wash cycle.
e) Select the hottest wash water temperature available, (not all temperatures will
be available).
f) Select the highest spin speed available.
g) Select the additional or 2nd Rinse option (if available).
h) Press and hold the “Start” key for 2 seconds. The door will lock and filling will
begin. NOTE: The water will dispense for a moment, then the door will unlock
and re-lock and the cycle will continue.
i) Once the filling has begun again, open the dispenser drawer and immediately
add 1 cup liquid chlorine bleach to the main wash detergent compartment.
The liquid chlorine bleach should immediately flow through the dispenser.
NOTE: Do not add any detergent to this clean out cycle. Use of more than 1 cup of
bleach per month will cause product damage over time. Addition of bleach without immediately
starting the will cause damage to the product over time
5. Once the clean out cycle has begun, allow the cycle to completely run.
6. After the clean out cycle is complete, leave the door slightly open/cracked to allow
for better ventilation and prevention of future odor issues.
7. If you removed the detergent compartment divider, be sure to replace the divider
to the correct position.
NOTE: If necessary, the clean out cycle may be interrupted by pressing the “Pause/
Cancel” button. This will stop the cycle. A “Rinse and Spin” cycle must then be run to
thoroughly rinse the remaining bleach from the unit. Failure to do so will cause damage
to the unit and clothing added to the next cycle.
In addition to the clean out procedure, always do the following to prevent future odor
issues.
1. Use only High Efficiency (HE) detergent.
2. Leave the door slightly open after each cycle to allow for better ventilation and
drying of washer interior.
3. Repeat this clean out procedure only on a monthly basis, if necessary.
