Possible rootkit virus. try any freeware mini windows rescue system (search for live cd list in google), boot from it and scan your harddrive
what about hard drive? does it have enough room for win temporary files? if you nave 3GB ram, by default windows tries to utilise 3GB hard disk memory for swap, also, if hibernation is enabled, there is a huge hibernation file. also, please watch for hard drive indicator, does it blinking frequently?

Open System by clicking the Start button , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
In the System section, next to Installed memory (RAM), you can see the amount of RAM your computer has.
