I have a Vtwin Kohler Command Pro 25 hp CV730S. My son was cutting the neighbors lawn. Grass was tall, with an 1/8 of an acre left to cut it started to rain. The engine started making a banging noise. Something like a rod knock. When the rpm's are high the noise lessens. When the rpm is low the noise is loud. We have not started it since. Do you have any ideas where to start looking or what it can be?
Thanks
John

Make sure the choke is coming off. Check the compression. Many times the head gasket may leak when the engine heats up. Also check for spark sometimes the magneto can heat up and quit after running a while. See if it will run if you prime with a little fuel, if so ,some of the Kohler engines this size have a fuel pump that could be failing. Check for vapor lock. It takes air and fuel properly mixed, spark and compression any of these missing the engine dies.
Cub Cadet has five models in their new Series 1000 lawn tractors, all
powered by Kohler engines. Cub Cadet models -- as several other lawn
equipment brands -- are manufactured by MTD Products.
The Cub
Cadet LT 1045 has a 20-hp Kohler single-cylinder engine, with an
aluminum block and cast-iron sleeve for longer life. It has a
full-pressure lubrication system with spin-on oil filter for easier
maintenance. This engine is not as powerful or as long lasting as the
Kohler V-Twin OHV, which is available in other models in the line, but
the LT 1045's engine is still solid enough to provide years of mowing.
The hydrostatic (automatic) transmission is a good match with the
engine and provides sufficient grip to cut grass on moderate inclines.
Power is transferred from the engine to the transmission by a heavy-duty
Kevlar belt rather than a more expensive shaft drive. A Kevlar belt
also drives the three cutting blades.
The mowing deck cuts a
swath of grass 46 inches wide at one pass, and is removable for service
and cleaning. Four anti-scalping wheels help keep the deck from scalping
grass on uneven ground. The cutting height is manually adjusted from
1-1/2 to 4 inches. The turning radius is 18 inches, which standard for
lawn tractors. This model is intended for use on 1- to 2-acre lawns
without many turns or small obstacles.
not possitive, but sounds like 1 of the bearings on the mower deck is starting to seaze up.I would start with that. Remove the deck and belts and check all the pullys and bearings for free movement.
When you mulch you can only cut 1/3 of the grass off. If the grass is 3" high you can only cut 1" off.If you are cutting more grass of than you are leaving there is no place to hide the clippings.A general rule is if you notice clippings and clumps beginning to lay set the mower up one notch at a time until the clippings are hardly noticeable. If you like a real low cut then mulching is probably not for you,you will probably want to bag the grass instead.Hope this helps.
Is this the first time cutting grass with a lawn tractor?
How tall of grass?
Use the grass cutting heigth adjustments on the tractor to a higher setting when cutting tall grass. Cut again to a lower height setting on the second pass. Grass higher than your tractor is not good for your tractor. Follow the manual instructions for best results.
