Hi. The USB ports on my lenovo y430 seem not to be working, as the computer does not recognize my external harddisks or external dvd writer. Is there any way I can fix this myself?

Your USB ports on your computer are plug and play. If you have issues with your USB port, it is port related, driver related or device related. The following solutions will help you identify the problem to resolve your USB port issues.
To Identify a Working USB Port
Begin troubleshooting your USB ports by checking Device Manager to see if your USB ports or hubs are working properly.

  1. Click the Start button. ClickControl Panel.
  2. ClickSystem and Maintenance.
  3. ClickDevice Manager.
  4. Double-clickUniversal Serial Bus controllersand check to see if all your USB ports, hubs and controllers are functioning correctly. Any devices not functioning will have a yellow exclamation mark in front of them.
  5. If Device Manager shows any USB ports, hubs or controllers are not functioning, check for updated drivers.

To Update the USB Port Driver

An out-of-date BIOS driver can create issues with your system recognizing the USB port.
  • Watch a Video on Steps to Update Bios on Your Computer.
    1. When the update process is complete, your computer will restart again to load the operating system with the new driver version installed.

To Run a Diagnostic Test on your USB Port

Dell has an online diagnostic tool to help identify and fix issues with your system.
  1. Go to theDell PC Diagnosticpage
  2. UnderChoose a Diagnostic Type, selectHardware.
  3. Using the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the window below, locate the listing for USB.
  4. SelectUSB.
  5. ClickRun Diagnostics.
  6. Agreeto Terms and Conditions in Legal Statement.
  7. Follow the instructions to test each USB port.

If you have tried every USB port and you use another USB device to it.. You may check the device manager Hi.
The USB ports on - ryanpajaro20_7.jpg and check if the USB controllers are disabled.. If not, you may click View and then click Scan Hardware Changes.. If still won't work, that is time that you call lenovo and have you laptop replaced defective USB ports..

How do i use a Samsung external DVD writer model SE-s084 without using the main USB cable. There are 2 USB plugs and i recently broke the main one. is there anyway i can use it with the other plug?

I don't quite understand what you mean with "the other plug", but if you connect your external DVD writer to any USB port, the computer must recognize it and for Windows there is no need to install driver for optical drives.

Probably if you don't want to be left with no free USB ports, you can purchase a USB hub, preferable if you invest in one with external power source like this one: USB 2 0 HUB Powered 7 Port High Speed free AC Adapter

Hope it helps!

I am using lenovo y430 it plays speakers even though i plug in my headphone,so please give me your valuable sugetions thanking you

Hi There and Welcome to FixYa!

There are only a number of things that you can try at this point, because the bottom line is to determine if you are really having a hardware issue with the audio port of your Y430. If you wish to know more information surrounding your system, you can visit Lenovo's consumer support site :

Lenovo Consumer Support

Here are the few things that you can try to confirm the audio port's hardware issue :
  1. Try a known good working set of headphones
  2. Plug in a known good working set of external speakers
  3. Re-install and upgrade your audio driver
If none of these would work, then it's 100% sure that the motherboard needs to be replaced where the audio port is embedded. My apologies to deliver the very bad news, but I would strongly suggest for you to contact Lenovo's warranty support and speak with the technician over the phone for other possible options.

Thank you so much for using Fixya.

My hard drive doesn't show up

If the external hard drive is not detected by yur computer, try first connecting the drive on a different USB port so we can test the USB port and then after that if still not yet detected try a different USB cable to test the cable and after that still not detected connect the drive on different computer so we can see if this is already a hardware problem.....

Computer won't recognize Toshiba 400gb passport USB harddisk.

I carry a small 8gb usb flash drive on my keychain for situations just like this....you can get them cheap now online or in a local store.....i keep full versions of windows, linux, other necessary repair and recovery software, and most importantly, all drivers that seem important enough to hang onto additional copies. Go here and download the drivers for your device and store them in a flash drive since any computer can read the embedded drivers of these drives......and next time you have a system ask for the drivers, pop your keychain flash drive into the most available usb port and select the drive to be scanned for drivers and install........doing this now will provide you with the ability and flexibility needed to work with higher end and recently released components.
GOOD LUCK AND PLS RATE THIS POST!!!!!!! :D

Screen not responding

can you hear any boot sounds?
(fan noise, harddisk rattling)
do the LEDs work (battery and charger , Hdd, CD/DVD-ROM-drive,WLAN)?
this would indicate it still boots up, but screen might be broke.

u lucky?
- remove battery pack! retry booting

if not, hook it up to another external monitor
(use vga-jack in the back of it)
reboot, wait for signal

- check if the the fan is jammed
(due to sand???)
this might cause overheat problem -
use compressed air to blow/clean the fan inlet

still no luck? it simply may be broke...

LG GSA E 40 L External dvd writer not recognised

you may be having conflicts with usb devices. try temporarily removing all unnecessary devices from the usb ports. unplug and then plug the drive back in. you could try another port. if all ports are in use, then unplug another device, like the mouse and plug in to that port, then plug the mouse into the writers port. i had a similar problem with a wireless usb lan that stopped another device from being recognised. when i removed the lan and replugged the unrecognised device, windows recognised it. i obviously had to use the wireless lan, so i swapped that with the mouse and it worked.
