Your system is probably getting hung up on a driver. To troubleshoot further, you would need to boot into Windows safe mode. On system start-up press the F8 key before the XP screen appears. Click on the following link to Microsoft's description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP. This just gets you past the stuck on the Windows XP screen.

Sorry, did not include the link to Microsoft on my solution. Copy the following link into your browser address field to go to "How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP" which is a step-by-step guide for troubleshooting involving the use of Windows XP Safe Mode... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434
An example of being unable to boot into normal mode after install Windows XP (Pro) on a HP Pavilion may give you some hints to a solution. Copy the following link into your browser .... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...
Problem was resolved in this instance after checking with HP web site and getting a patch to resolve a service pack conflict with AMD processor in the HP Pavilion. This suggests that you should at least be checking with the HP web site as well for possible patches for your HP Compaq Presario 2175.

You may have some malfunctioning hardware. When the computer boots up and you see the compaq screen, you should be able to perform hardware diagnostics by pressing one of the F keys. Look in the bottom right hand corner. My guess is going to be malfunctioning hard drive, especially since the computer is a bit "older" and age is rough on laptop hard drives.
I believe the key for diags is F9

Boot up problem

Dear sir/madam,

Please try these following steps.

1.) First You Need to Check if the HDD is Working Properly Or Not, So First Turn off Your Computer Completely and U Have to Tun it Back On.
Now As Soon as U Turn it On(Before the Compaq Screen Disappears, Keep Tapping the F10 Key Immediately To Go to BIOS.

Now In Your BIOS Go to The Tools Option and Execute the HDD Self test, Both Short and Long
[If the Test Fails Call Compaq Support @ 1-800-HPINVENT For Replacement]
[If The Test Says No IDE Device Found - U Must Try to Reseat the HDD]
[To Reseat the HDD - Turn U R NB Upside down and U Will Find a Comparment That Has the Symbol of Stack of Discs or Cds, Just Unscrew the Compart Ment and Pull the HDD Out, Then Put if Back it And Screw it Back]

Dont Worry - The Steps I Quote Here, Are Compaqs Prescibed Steps and It Will Not Void U R Warranty, If Fact If U Call Technical Support, They Will Advise U to Do the Same thing!!!!

If Both the Tests Pass then The HDD is Fine(90% It Should Not Be the Problm)

2.) Again Turn Your Computer Off and Turn it Back On and Before the Compaq Screen Disappears, Tap the F11 Key Which Bring Up the Built in Recovery Partion Menu.

From then On It is All Menu Driven

Note : Select Destructive Recovery If U Don't Have Any Importat Data in U R HDD
Else Select Non Destructive Recovery

My hard drive burnt out. The hard drive test says failed and the operating system won't boot. I placed a leftover hard drive from my Playstation 3 into the laptop and now it says no operating system found....

Try the recovery console from a windows xp recovery/install disk:
To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1.Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3.Select the operating system you want to repair (you may have only one option).
4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5.At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation. From here I would try "chkdsk /r" and "fixboot"
For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
6.To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Once you've done this restart the computer and see if it boots up.

How to clear and restore?

Your notebook should have came with a set of recovery CDs. If so you can recover your PC with the following steps:

  1. If the PC works, back up all data files that you want to save onto removable media, such as a DVD. Remove the backup DVD you have made.
  2. Press the Eject button on the disc drive, and wait for the tray to open. Insert Recovery DVD disc #1 and close the tray.
  3. Turn off the PC.
    • If the notebook works: Click Start on the taskbar, click Turn Off Computer , and then click Turn Off . Or
    • Press and hold the On button approximately 5 seconds until it turns off.
  4. Disconnect all devices.
  5. Press the On button.
  6. Recovery starts; wait for the onscreen instructions to display, and then follow those instructions.
    • For standard recovery, press R . Select Next to proceed with the System Recovery. Select Yes to start the recovery. Insert the remaining recovery discs when directed. Or
    • For full System Recovery, press F . Select Yes to perform a full System Recovery. Insert the remaining discs when directed.
  7. When the recovery program finishes, the drive tray ejects. Remove the disc.
  8. Click Restart.
  9. After it restarts, a series of startup screens appears. To proceed with the initial Microsoft Windows setup, complete the setup screens that appear.
  10. Complete the startup, finish the registration process, and wait until you see the desktop.
  11. When you have access to the Windows desktop, connect to the Internet as soon as possible to update the DEC software as follows:
  1. Update the system virus definitions .
  2. Get the latest critical system updates using Microsoft's Windows Update .
  3. Update the HP software on the system .

If you don't have any CDs you could try the F10 key to see if you have the contents of the CDs hidden on your hard drive. It is the same steps as above except instead of inserting a CD you would use the following as step 2:
When the Compaq logo appears, press the F10 key on the keyboard. (You have only a few seconds to press the F10 key before the normal startup process continues.)
If you this doesn't work and you are certain you don't have your recovery CDs you can get a new set directly from Compaq from the following site:
