1) Install all of the usual Minolta software in Vista if you haven't already.
2) Create a new folder somewhere
3) Create a new txt file in that folder and name it minolta.inf and paste this into it:

; minolta.inf -- Test Vista Minolta Film Drivers
;
;
; To remove this driver and install the original
; manufacturer's driver, go into Device Manager,
; open Imaging devices, then click on the scanner name
; with the right mouse button and choose Uninstall.

4. Save file. Turn on scanner and go into device manager and update the old minolta driver with this driver. You may have to manually update it.
5. Once installed, all the normal Minolta programs now work just fine. Enjoy!

I tested this on Vista 32 Ultimate with a Dimage IV but it should work on all the models listed in the .inf file.

    Here we are, 2 years later, with a Minolta Scan elite 5400 II from eBay. And we have, for the past 6 months, been running Windows 7 64 bit on an old 6 year old dfi. Searched for driver, found this solution, applied it, worked like a charm 1st time. Many thanks to KainAnderson for allowing the old beast to live!

  • jogchum_reit Apr 27, 2011

    After an afternoon trying everything I did this and it worked immediately.
    Thanks very much.

I've been trying to get my Dimage 5400 II to work with Windows 7 64 bit version. The problem is that I keep getting an error message saying no driver is installed. I go to device manager and manually install the minolta.inf file I created by cutting and pasting as Kain suggested. I get a message that no driver is found. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

  • jordsvin Oct 28, 2010

    The fix worked for me instantly with Windows 7 64-bit.

Hi....I have the dimage elite 5400II also and I used solution number 2. I created the inf file also and replaced the driver with it and yet I get an error code 21 saying there is no scanner installed. Yet I see it in the device manager and it shows up in the import utility in photoshop yet won't launch. Any suggestions?

  • rwphoto May 09, 2011

    Hi, thanks, my 5400 works now fine with win7 64 bit. Is there any way to make it work from inside Photoshop CS5 as a plugin? and not as a separate application? since last contact I downloaded the TWAIN support from Adobe for CS5, installed it in the 32 version of CS5. Now I see the Dimage 5400 from within PS, I click on it, it starts with the Logo and then error 21, scanner not found, any idea on how to solve this issue? Thanks again!

A couple of weeks ago I had to upgrade my machine and install Vista (Business, 32). At first I feared my 5400 would turn into an expensive doorstop, however, I discovered that not only Vuescan, but Minolta DiMAGE Scan (the final version, 1.1.5, available from Minolta.com) and <ta-daa!> SilverFast 6.4, work fine under Vista. So far, I haven't crashed the machine, so I guess I have a scanner for a few years. Silverfast 6.6 claims to work under Vista for the 5400 but it costs almost as much as the scanner did. :-(

I would like to thanks KailAnderson for his post: my 5400 works fine as usual, the only drawback is that I can't find it under "Import" menu in Photoshop, but it's only a minor problem.

Thank you !!!!!

Another solution is to run a virtual machine inside Vista.
As many of us have upgraded form xp to vista you can still use the xp licence to run xp inside vista as virtual machine using the xp drivers for the 5400 scanner.

I am looking for a driver for the minolta discan 5400 on vista. Can you help me?

Well, I have not so good news. The DiMAGE 5400 II is a discontinued product at Konica Minolta. There was never a Vista driver for it, and there is no plan to develop one as the product is no longer being sold.

Hope that's helpful.

Will this scanner work on Vista or must I use in on a computer that has XP? How do I get it to work with Vista? Would it be easier if I got Windows 7?

You have to replace the original Konica Minolta driver with the custom one I have created below. Here are the detailed steps.

1) Install the Konica Minolta XP software in Vista/Win7.
2) Plug in your DImage Scanner into a USB port and turn it on with the door closed. It will detect and install the original Konica Minolta Driver.
3) Create an empty folder on you harddrive (for instance go to my computer, double click on the c: drive, then right click and create a new folder named newminolta).
4) Open windows notepad and copy the following into it:
; sonyscanners.inf -- Sony (Konica Minolta) Film Drivers
;
;
; Beta driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating
; systems for all known Sony film scanners.

5. Now save you new notepad file in the directory you created as sonyscanners.inf NOT as sonyscanners.inf.txt or sonyscanners.txt (i.e. c: ewminoltasonyscanners.inf)
6. Go to system control panel (may have to change control panel to classic view to see system).
7. Select Device Manager
8. Select Imaging Devices
9. Right click on Minolta XXXX (depending on model) and click on driver tab. Select Update Driver.
10. Select Browse my computer for driver software.
11. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
12. Select Have Disk
13. Browse to c: ewminoltasonyscanners.inf and click OK
14. Click Next. Windows should now say it updated driver.
15. Run Dimage software with door closed. Wait for it to initialize and green light stops blinking.
16. Open door and insert film holder and start scanning.
17. If you are trying to use a Minolta 5400 with firewire in Windows 7, you have to change your 1394 driver to the legacy windows 1394 driver in order for the scanner to detect. Google for instructions as it's too detailed to add in here.
18. The above driver should relink virtually all known Minolta scanners (USB/SCSI/Firewire) to the Windows TWAIN driver so it will work with the legacy Minolta software.

Where can I download a driver that will work in Vista for my Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400?

Unfortunately support for your model has been discontinued. The most recent driver is here

http://ca.konicaminolta.com/support/americas/scanners/dimage-scanners/dimage-scanelite_5400/software_drivers/drivers/ver115_win.html

but only supports officially up to Windows XP.

If the driver does not work in XP SP3 and Vista, this may be due to full system access being required by the driver and/or its ancillary userspace software.

You can either try running it as Administrator, configure for XP or 2000 compatibility, or if nothing else works, you may be forced to install VMware or Microsoft VirtualPC and virtualize an ad hoc installation of Windows XP SP2 with updates inhibited, in order to be able to run the scanner. In enterprise environments whole PCs are often set aside to run outdated operative systems in a controlled environment; you may do the same thing with only one PC and VMware.

Connection problem (error4 ) Minolta Dimage 5400

You have to replace the original Konica Minolta driver with the custom one I have created below. Here are the detailed steps.

1) Install the Konica Minolta XP software in Vista/Win7.
2) Plug in your DImage Scanner into a USB port and turn it on with the door closed. It will detect and install the original Konica Minolta Driver.
3) Create an empty folder on you harddrive (for instance go to my computer, double click on the c: drive, then right click and create a new folder named newminolta).
4) Open windows notepad and copy the following into it:
; sonyscanners.inf -- Sony (Konica Minolta) Film Drivers
;
;
; Beta driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating
; systems for all known Sony film scanners.

5. Now save you new notepad file in the directory you created as sonyscanners.inf NOT as sonyscanners.inf.txt or sonyscanners.txt (i.e. c:\newminolta\sonyscanners.inf)
13. Browse to c:\newminolta\sonyscanners.inf and click OK

Driver

Second the Vuescan reco. That's what I use. OTOH, a dual boot machine with an XP partition can also solve the problem. A real PITA but feasible (I have one).
