I have a Sony Trinitron Model KV-27FS120. A couple of weeks ago, a black box started popping up for no reason. This box covers about one-half of the picture and is in the lower half of the screen. If I press the 'picture mode' button on the remote, the box goes away and then returns in about 10 seconds. It does not does this on all channels. At first, I thought it might be a cable compant problem, but the black box appears when I play a DVD, too. The DVD starts out okay, but if I skip to another scene or segment, the black box appears! HELP!

Check the set up. You may have closed captioning turned on which will show up as a black box if there is no closed captioning information for the selected channel. If that fails to resolve the problem, update this.
Sony put i pic killer circut in there tvs. if the tube was not
giving the proper feed voltage on the guns in
the pic tube it blinks off ,sound good no pic.
if you turn up the brightness
on the flyback transfromer you can
get a little more life out of it ,
It must be connected with the color circuit of your tv, a board connected to back end of the tube. Could be dust, cob web or carbon deposit shorting a transistor. Popping noise if loud enough can be attributed to high voltage circuit fault and picture tube.
For the last week my TV has been going to a black screen for 10 seconds or so then the picture returns. It has been continual. Last night it stopped going to black screen, but now the standby light flashes 5 consecutive times and the color went haywire. A lot of red and everything that is suppose to be black is green.
I did a soft and hard reset with no success. What's wrong and is it worth fixing? Bought new in November 2002.
This is a simple and common problem. The solder joints on the vertical output IC have cracked loose. I actually did a housecall on the exact same set with the exact same symptoms this morning! A good tech will resolder the pins of the vertical output IC and all other major solder joints on the main board and the set will play fine.
Hard one to call as I have not seen the newer sony chassis yet BUT it sound like to me a fault in the PIP section if there is one or the crt driver circuit or even in the video jungle IC. It is only three months old so call the store where you got it as there should be a warrantee on the set.Good Luck
