DS10 with SBS PCI Expansion

We have a Compaq DS10 with a SBS PCI expansion connected and loaded with OpenVMS 7.1-2. When we add any type of network card DE500, DE504, etc...we get hangups and/or system freezes when trying to load TCPIP software. If we remove the network cards from the expansion the system will boot normally. Installing the network cards directly into the DS10 works fine. The DS10 has the latest firmware and the cards have been swapped for different ones in case we had a bad one. It appears that it might be caused by the order in which VMS starts certain drivers or software but we cannot pin it down. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Our system is configured as follows: The DS10 contains the SBS PCI expansion board in slot 1, KZPCM in slot 2, KZPCA in slot 3 and a ELSA Gloria Synergy PBXGK in slot 4. In the expansion box we have a DE504 in slot 1, IEP11 GPIB-488 in slots 2 and 5 and a PBXDA Digi interface in slot 6. I can boot the system normally if I prevent the IEP11 driver from starting. I tried moving the cards around thinking that might help but it did not. I can also start the IEP11 driver from within VMS and no problems occur. It seems only when VMS starts it in a specific order does it cause problems. HP does support VMS....if you have a fat credit card.

I'd like to thank Dan for his input on this problem. It ultimately led to the diagnosis and repair of our booting problem. We ended up moving the IEP11 cards to slots 1 and 3, DE504 card in slot 2, and the Digi interface in slot 6 of the expansion. The system boots normally and we are testing the system with QVet.

It would seem the HP would know the anwer to this or did they stop supporting VMS?

Version 7.1-2 is an older version of the OS. I will have to check, but I think that V7.2 will resolve this. What version of TCP/IP are you using? Back in the day when I supported TCP and VMS, there were some timing issues that causes odd behavior. If you can provide the details about your configuration, I can check and get back to you. If necessary, an examination of a forced crashdump may be needed.

A rare opportunity to work with VMS again!!

Good stuff.

Please indicate what type of tape you have available for the dump if it is necessary.

    Thanks,

I am running V7.3 at the moment. Let me restore your version and poke around. Worse case I'll need to get a crashdump from the "freeze". My job at HP (DEC/Compaq) was to resolve this type of problem, so I should be able to help. This may take a while as I'll need to try to either reproduce the problem or play machine and just examine the driver code. I'll be traveling for the next week, so give me some time. I'll update this ASAP.

Thanks for the update. I think the IEP11 driver is rather old and is not hte most tollerant of timing issues. I plan on lookin up the code this weekend (just got back) and I'll try to provide a reason why this move worked for you.

How to add usb ports to Dell 530

Suggest use a USB adapter card.

More specifically a PCI USB adapter card.

Dell Support > Inspiron 530 Series Desktop PC > Owner's Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/en/OM/HTML/index.htm

In the list click on - Removing and Installing parts

1) Unplug the computer from power.
[Unplug FROM the surge protector, not the back of the computer. (Power Supply)
Unplugging from the back could lead to a power surge ]

2) Computer on a table open the computer case,
Click on - Removing the Computer Cover - in the list.

3) FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware inside the computer.

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open.
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again, upon your return.

4) http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/en/OM/HTML/parts.htm#wp1184332

Here you see an illustration of your motherboard. Oriented as it is in your computer case. (Just no hardware components, nor cables are attached)

At the bottom of the motherboard are 2 White long expansion slots.
In the illustration they are labeled by the numbers 21 and 22.
If one of these slots is open, and not being used, you can install a PCI USB adapter card.

This is one example of a PCI USB adapter card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5606148&Sku=S262-2744

At the back of the computer, located towards the bottom, are the Expansion Slots.
Four horizontal slots.

If there isn't some sort of add-on adapter card already installed, all of the expansion slots will be covered with an Expansion Slot Cover.

If there is an add-on adapter card installed of course, one of the expansion slot covers will be removed.

Line up the PCI USB adapter card with the open PCI slot, you have chosen.
Now look at the expansion slots at the rear of the computer.
Notice what expansion slot that the PCI USB card's bracket, lines up with.

Go to the back of the computer, and view the small metal bracket on the bottom right. Loosen the Thumbscrew, and swing the bracket out. (Thumbscrew is supposed to just loosen, not come out)

Remove the expansion slot cover for your PCI slot choice.
Install the PCI USB adapter card.
Note that there is a Locating Lug in the PCI slot, and a matching Locating Notch, on the PCI USB adapter card.

Line them up, then push the PCI USB card straight down into the PCI slot.
Also watch the metal bracket on the back of the PCI USB card.
The 'tang' at the Bottom, slides down in-between the framework.

The top of the bracket has a half-moon notch, that lines up with a small 'dowel' on the computer case framework.
Make sure it is aligned, and the bracket is aligned.

What I am referring to will become readily apparent, as you go to install the PCI USB card.
If there are any other add-on adapter cards, they may try to fall out, when you go to install the new add-on card.

You just have to line them up, so their bracket notches are all on the 'dowels', and hold them in place. Then swing the 'door' closed. Tighten the thumbscrew.

If you have an Add-on card in the way, and by moving it to the other PCI slot, will allow you to install the PCI USB card, go ahead, and move it.
Doesn't matter. BIOS will find it, and assign an Interrupt Request.

There are two other expansion slots above the 2 white PCI slots.
The expansion slot right above the top PCI slot, is a PCI-Express x1 slot.
If this slot is open, OR the only one available, you can use a PCI-Express USB adapter card.

Example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5606149&CatId=511

The last expansion slot you have is above the PCI-Express x1 slot.
This is a PCI-Express x16 slot, and is ONLY used for a graphics card.

IP address change needed on a AlphaServer DS10

First, identify the NIC you wish to change; use:

$ MC LANCP <ret>

> SHOW DEVICE

Next, use the menu driven utility "TCPIP$CONFIG", to set your desired IP address etc:

$ @TCPIP$CONFIG <ret>

Option 1 - core environment

Option 2 - Interfaces (then select your NIC or the IP Addr to change)

Option 2 - add/change a Primary address on *** (where *** is your NIC).

Need to install graphics card

Looking at the stats, the computer has a PCI-E(xpress) slot in it. You should be able to put the least expensive card in the system and be fine since you are not gaming. The 250 watt power supply is a bit of a concern. Like most comercially built computers, this one comes with the cheapest power supply Compaq/HP could put in it. I would replace the power supply when installing the new card. Installation of the card is simple. Open the case, look for the expansion slots (near botton of Mother Board), the top slot is the PCI-E. Put the card in, plug all your cables back in (power, keyboard, mouse, ect) before you put the side of the case back on (just in case). Make sure you have the monitor plugged into the new card. Turn the computer back on, in most cases it will auto recognise the new card and use it. When you get to windows, put in the install cd and follow the promts to install the card.

If things do not work out this easy, just add a comment to this posting and I will assist you, or someone will.

Hi, Is Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 Silence 1GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video Card capable for my Compaq HP Presario SR2020NX? -thanks a lot.

You mean will the Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 with 1GB of graphics memory, work in a Compaq Presario SR2020NX Desktop PC?

Yes.

The Compaq Presario SR2020NX Desktop PC has a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00757470&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3245048

{Motherboard illustration and photo are towards the bottom of the page}

Look at the specifications.
Scroll down to the heading - Expansion slots.

Three PCI. (PCI expansion slots)

One PCI Express x16 graphics.

NOTE*
Looking at the motherboard illustration, it is Wrong.
Shows - PCIEX1 (PCI E X1)
According to the specifications it is a PCIEX16 expansion slot. (PCI-E x16)

A PCI-Express x1 slot has 36 contact pins. 18 on each side.

In comparison a PCI slot {White} has 124 contact pins. 62 on each side.

Looking at the photo of the supposed PCI-E x1 slot they show, the black PCI-Ex1 slot is longer than the white PCI slots.

It is a PCI-Express x16 slot with 164 pins. 82 on each side.

The Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 uses a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot.

So you know the graphics card will fit. Low-profile to boot.

Power requirement:
The Compaq Presario SR2020NX desktop computer comes with a 300 Watt power supply.
(Although in actuality it's more like 70 percent of the maximum rated wattage. 210 Watts)

Enough power for the computer, and the graphics card.
ATI graphics cards do not use as much power as a comparable Nvidia graphics card.

Concerned that the Asus graphics card uses DDR3 graphics ram memory, and the Presario SR2020NX uses DDR2 Sdram ram memory?

Don't be. The graphics cards graphics memory runs independent of the computer's ram memory.

Apple G5 - PCI-X slots

PCI-X is powerful expansion port. The purpose of the slots on your motherboard is for you to be able to install a component that doesn't already exist hardwired on your motherboard. The most common use is for high speed internet connections called a network or ethernet card (the fat phone cord type of connection, also called cat-5).

PCI-X slots can take both PCI-X and certain types of PCI cards. The processing power potential of the slot is only fully used in certain situations and with the correct components.

SUMMARY:
PCI-X is for you to add a component to your computer, most likely a high speed internet card. You should use the full slot by purchasing a PCI-X compliant Ethernet card. This gives you the potential to transfer data at super high speed
