  • Push the stopper down to fully seal the stopper against the tub drain.

  • 2

Turn the knob on top of the stopper counterclockwise with your fingers. Do not lift the stopper while turning the knob. Remove the knob from the stopper.

  • 3

Insert a large flathead screwdriver into the slot on the center shaft of the stopper. You will see the center shaft when you remove the knob. Turn the shaft counterclockwise to unthread it from the retaining hole in the bathtub drain basket.

  • 4

Use a pair of vise-grip pliers to turn the shaft if the center hole has corrosion and will not accept a screwdriver. Lock the jaws of the pliers securely around the shaft, and turn the shaft counterclockwise.

  • 5

Pull the stopper out of the tub by lifting it by the shaft.

How do I remove the the cover of the drain to clean it

Are we talking about a sink drain or a floor drain? If its sink drain there is a stopper on the top and have to released from under the sink. The pipe underneath will have a 90 degree connection with a rod metal or plastic piece connected to the pull rod. Disconnect and it will free the stopper for cleaning. If a kitchen sink the piece is attached with plumbers puddy and a nut from under the sink. I would say its not worth cleaning or messing with it. If it's a floor drain. There is screws or a drop insert. Remove screws to release or simply lift out with a screw driver. Hope it helps.

Clogged drain on moen bathroom sink

There should be a stopper valve on the sink's downspout (the first section of drain pipe). You SHOULD be able to loosen the nut holding the stopper valve's lever inside the pipe. Once you remove that nut, you can pull the lever out - that releases the stopper inside the sink, so you should start with the stopper OPEN, and hold it open with a chopstick or pencil or other tool when you remove that lever.

The lever and the bottom of the stopper itself will be wrapped with masses of hair. That's normal. Clean it up and reinsert it, put the nut back on & snug it down, then readjust the stopper.

If that's not enough, you may need to open the trap (the gooseneck-shaped piece of drain pipe under the sink) to clean it out.

    Grohe drain stopper installation

Try cleaning drain with a length of wire. Strip insulation back about an inch. Turn exposed wire back to form a hook and put down drain and spin, then remove from drain, repeat until hook comes out fairly
clean. Then put drain cleaner down drain, follow instructions with drain cleaner. This should remove gunk that is preventing stopper from working correctly.

I am trying to use a plunger in a slow drain. bathroom lav. The pop-up valve stopper is in the way of my plunger. the Pop-up valve is a Price- Pfister. My past experience with other older pop-up valves has...

Some of the drain plugs have holes or slots in them so that the stopper can not be removed without taking the actulating lever out from under the sink. This rod is part of the linkage that is hooked to lift rod on top, Unscrew retaining nut to remove rod so you can take stopper out. Remember that any water that is in sink is going to run out of this hole once you remove rod. Good luck and thank you.

    Removing bath drain

There are two types of tub drain stoppers for the delta brand - lift & turn and toe tap.

    Lift and Turn:
The lift & turn stopper for the bathtub unscrews counterclockwise while in the full up position.

    Toe Tap:
The toe tap stopper does also but if the cap may unscrew from it before the entire stopper comes out. In that case, there is a nut that is now exposed and can be accessed to unscrew the assembly.

If either of these is "spinning" without unscrewing, the threads are stripped and you would need to exert upward pressure while unscrewing in hopes of uncoupling this from the bath waste. If that doesn't work you would have to unscrew the bath waste flange from the drain pipe.
This will require access under the tub. I hope this answer the question for you. Thank you for using FIXYA. Jeff

Pop up raises only partialy, pop up not square in drain

YOU CAN TRY BY ADJUSTING THE ROD ,UNDERNEITH THE SINK ,MUST POP-UP ASSEMBLIES,HAVE A ROD COMING OUT OF THE DRAIN AND A ROD WITH SEVERAL HOLES ON ,IT TO ADJUST HOW FAR YOU CAN PULL THE ROD UP ,WHICH IN TURNS SHOULD MAKE THE STOPPER GO DOWN,ALSO A COMMON PROBLEM IS THERE IS TO MUCH HAIR AND TOOTHPASTE STUCK ON THE STOPPER ITSELF,SO SIMPLY UN SCREW THE NUT, THAT IS HOLDING THE ROD INTO THE DRAIN ,THEY LIFT UP THE STOPPER,THE STOPPER SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE REMOVED WITHOUT TAKING THE NUT AND ROD OUT ,IF SO YOU MIGHT HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE POP-UP ASSEMBLY

    Tub drain wont stay open

If this is a trip lever waste type of drain it can be adjusted, Remove the 2 screws that hold the adjusting lever, this will allow you to remove the stopper. Clean the stopper of hair and sludge and replace. This will usually fix the problem. If not then adjust the linkage for the stopper.

    Delta pull-up bathtub drain problem

    Hi Bigoz,

Drop the drain plug down about half way and try turning it counter clockwise. If you get no resistance after a full turn you will probably need to cut or break it out. If the pin is missing I'm guessing this is what you'll have to do. This answer assumes you have a lift and turn style drain.

Please ratre this response and Good Luck, Phil
