Since there is no shutter or aperture priority mode on the A550, the shutter speed is predetermined by the shooting mode. You can try changing the ISO speed when in a certain mode, but the camera may compensate by changing the aperture setting rather than the shutter speed. You'll have to experiment.

You can place the camera in Long Shutter Mode, however, when you want exposures times between 1 and 15 seconds. You set that by pressing the Function menu and Func. Set button when in [Camera icon]M mode, then using the < and > buttons to cycle through the long shutter settings.

Hope this helps!

How to remove flat battery from canon power shot A550

Look at the little door labeled CR1220 in this picture. Pry it open with your fingernail, and take the battery down to your local drugstore to buy a replacement (should be around $3).. Note that W-mart for some reason is expensive for the common CR1220 battery compared to retail drug stores.

A550 date/time problem

Open up your battery door, and you'll notice another tiny door labeled "CR1220". Pry open that door with your fingernails, and you'll find a little button watch battery that keeps the time settings for your camera. It's time for a new battery. Take that little battery down to your local drug store (Walgreens or Rite-Aid). Should only cost about $4. Note that Walmart is more expensive for these type of batteries, and drug stores are usually cheaper (I know, it's hard to believe).

What is the speed of the card? It should say so on the card, or list its class (look for a "C" with a number centered in the C). If it doesn't say so on the card, and if you've payed only a few dollars for it, it's likely a low speed card and can cause this problem.

This can also occur due to charging time of the flash capacitor. Try turning off your flash and see if that dramatically improves the shot turn around time. If it does, you may also want to consider higher power batteries to improve charge time. Recommend NiMH rechargeables, rated 2500 mah or better. Look on the package, it should state the power rating. If it doesn't, avoid the batteries as they are likely low power.

Just a video of 8.03 minutes captured in my Power Shot A550 Digital Camera shows 867 MB size

A 1.3 hour movie is recorded on a DVD, not a CD. DVDs can hold a minimum of 4.7 GB, or nearly seven times the capacity of CDs. Your 867 MB file of 8.03 minutes indicates that you were recording at about 1,800 KB/sec, or the highest quality recording level. (See specifications here.) If you're willing to record your video in a smaller size, you can get much more recording on a CD.
