It depends...

If the display is a VFD type, and if a new VFD tube is available as a separate part, then it can be replaced for $39.95 plus parts. We do that.

If it is an LCD type, the backlights can be replaced. We do that, too.

If it's a VFD type but the VFD tube is not available as a separate part, they can usually be brightened up a little.

You would need to remove the control panel assembly, then take the circuit board out of the frame.

(At our site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical control panel assembly in under 5 minutes)

Then use a soft cloth (not a paper towel) with a non-ammonia cleaner and wipe off the front of the glass VFD and the rear of the display window in the plastic frame.

Feel free to contact me directly with your brand and model if you would like me to check into a new VFD tube for yours (if so equipped).

My digital display is so dim you can barely read it. anyway to brighten it up?

It may be a weak VFD tube or it may be that the rear of the display window and front of the display glass are very dusty.

Sometimes you can clean it inside to brighten it up.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Then you can detach the keypad connector (as per attached photo) then remove the control panel screws.

Be careful not to crack the glass display when handling it, or it's a goner.

Then you can use a soft cloth (not a paper towel) and a mild cleaner (not ammonia-based) to clean the front surface of the VFD display glass and the rear side of the clear bezel (display window) that's attached to the keypad.

Direct spraying of cleaners on the keypad and steam from the cooktop can damage the controls.

I always recommend that you spray non-ammonia cleaner on a soft cloth (not a paper towel which can scratch) and gently wipe the keypad.

Some connectors may have a lock.

If that cleaning didn't help, then you have a weak VFD.

On this model, the VFD is not available separately, so you would have to order a new control circuit board for it.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts here.

I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.

The time display numbers are very dim and I can hardly read them.

There are two main causes for this dimming:

1. Dust & other particle buildup on the front of the display glass and the rear of the display window. This can be cleaned.

Cleaning the display is easy, but you need to be careful so you don't break the glass.

First you would unplug the microwave or turn off its breaker.

Then see the video here that shows you how to remove your control panel assembly in less than 5 minutes.

Next, disconnect the keypad strip as shown in the photo below, then remove the screws that hold your circuit board in the plastic frame.

6c2e7e2.jpg
Then carefully (since the display is made of glass) remove your circuit board.

Using a soft cloth (since paper towels can scratch) lightly dampened with non-ammonia cleaner (since ammonia can damage some polycarbonate plastics), gently wipe off the front of the glass.

Then gently wipe off the back side of the plastic display window in the plastic control panel frame.

Reassemble, reinstall, and power it up, and it should be brighter, sometimes a whole lot brighter!

If that does not brighten it up enough, then...

2. Your vacuum display tube is wearing out and either the VFD display tube or the whole control circuit board must be replaced, depending on your model number, which you didn't mention.

If you'll contact me with your model number, I can give you an estimate and free do it yourself info.

The display is dim on the oven. Everything works

1. Sometimes you can clean it inside to brighten it up for a while.

2. In some cases, we can replace the VFD to brighten one up if it's available for a given model.

3. The last solution is to replace the control circuit board.

For more specifics on the options 2 & 3, we would need your brand and full model number.

As for suggestion # 1, cleaning:

Dim control panel unable to read

Removed the amber glass which obscures the display enough to remove the wiring from view. This also allows you to see the characters much more clearly. You now can see the inidvidual light elements.
It's not too bad, people don't even notice, but they do notice you can now tell the time and see what the oven is doing.

Display not workign

Sadly, the display tube is not available separately, so the only way to fix this is to replace the board, at a whopping $181.48!

One trick that helps is to remove the control panel assembly, take the circuit board out of the frame and very carefully wipe the front of the glass and the rear surface of the control panel frame's display window.

Use a soft cloth with alcohol-based (non-ammonia) window cleaner.

That will brighten it up quite a bit.

At our site, we now have a video available showing how to remove a typical control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Be sure to unplug the oven before you do any disassembly.
