Press OK to clear the error until the counter reaches its limit. (Then the printer will not work at all.)
This is a messy problem to fix and may not be worth doing. The waste ink absorbers are sets of pads, one below the print head cleaning area and the other down at the bottom of the printer. They absorb ink during the printhead cleaning cycle.
First have lots of newspaper or other absorbent material nearby. Then disassemble the printer from the top. You will need to remove some screws to get to the bottom set of pads. Blot off the excess ink and blot ink out of the areas where the pads sit. Put the pads under running water until the water stays clear. Then dry the pads. You can use a blow dryer to speed the process. Then reassemble the printer.
Next reset the waste ink counter:
1) Enter SERVICE MODE By pressing Menu-Scan-Copy-Scan (press each key in order)
2) Enter NVRAM by presing then OK
3) SET ABS-M LEVEL TO 0
4) Set ABS P LEVEL TO 0
5) Set press STOP to EXIT
6) OK
Do not do this reset without replacing or cleaning and drying the pads. Waste ink will spill everywhere after a short time.
Please note that the limit for the waste ink counter is set so that it is normally reached at the expected end of life for the printer. If your printer is under warranty, let Canon repair it. If it is out of warranty, additional failures may occur soon.
I hope this helps.

(on some Canon printers, you need to press and hold Menu while turning on the printer and then press Menu 4 times to get to the correct setting to reset. It depends on the buttons on the panel of the unit.)
