The only suggestion I can give you is contact Sony to see if they can provide you with an updated driver for windows 7 to allow your handycam to work with your computer. Unfortunately when windows changed their operational systems a lot of companies did not offer the required driver upgrade for people that have older units, and even if you went with the Firewire I think you would still run into problems with compatibility issues.

The very latest driver available is USBDRVEN.EXE which does not solve the issue as it seems I still need a FireWire connection. Is it possibible that the USB cable could be connected to a FireWire converter, i.e fit the FireWire to the camera output and then link it to fit into the USB input of the computer? If such exists, where could one get this?

copy the USBDRVEN.EXE to a folder on the C: drive, double click on it - it will explode the files into a the folder you created. run setup from this folder - do the compatiblity mode install when warned. open device manager and update driver for the device with the question mark. select the folder were you exploded the file in the c drive. do the compatible install when warned. restart pc
