Check the right strap lug and see if it is loose. It is a well know problem with the G9 that the screws that hold it onto the top cover come lose and fall into the camera, causing many different problems is they short out parts of the circuit
Have you try cleaning and reseating the connectors, specifically the battery, the hard disk, and (next will be easier when you'll get the hand on a CF-18 Service Manual http://www.toughbookdrivers.com/drivers/cf-18/), the memory board, and the display ?
Press the "DISPLAY" button until you get the display you wish. You can choose the information you want overlayed on the image in the custom display settings, see pages 55 onwards in your user manual.
When my former wife arrived from a European trip, she was very upset because suddenly the Canon G9 I had lent her wouldn't open. It was right before Christmas too. I immediately went on line and found Cameras and Parts which was highly recommended by others. After having an unproductive conversation with Canon in which they claimed their was not a general problem with the G9, I contacted Cameras and Parts. I'm happy to report that the camera was fixed in no time and cost about half of what Canon wanted - plus it was refurbished and works great. So you might try Cameras and Parts.
