If you mean you got an external flash for the camera, it must be compatible with your D40x in order for it to work. You didn't say what kind of flash you got so there's no way we can tell if you got the correct one.

I have a canon ixus digital camera. i just kept for charging the cam. after that it didn't work.

I don't understand your description of the problem. If you are trying to charge the camera battery in the camera (using USB lead?) then this won't work. The battery for this camera must be removed from the camera and charged in the separate battery charger that was supplied with the camera. If you bought the camera second-hand and didn't get the charger, you must buy a replacement. They can be bought on Amazon.

My Nikon Coolpix LP16 is not detected by Windows on either my PC or my son's laptop, but IS detected by our Mac laptop. I've tried different ports, different cables, reinstalled software, reset the camera...

Microsoft updates frequently make changes to the registry which cause our cameras to no longer be recognized. The simple solution is to start using a separate card reader.

Fuji s602z CF II card not initializing

I've bought a SanDisk ExtremeIII 4GB CFI card. Ofcourse, at the beginig nothing worked. Camera format command worked neither (initializing problem,...). I then formated my card through a car reader on fat16 and now everything works. Just make this command: format <volume>: /FS:FAT. After checking and formathing the card, you will be asked to go on by 64K size of cluster. say Yes.
