Yes-
By clicking the Menu button, you'll see the shooting menu, sort of a red/pink color, with an icon at the top that resembles a camera. The 4th option is Self-timer, which you can set to a 10 or 2 second delay. The next time you press the shutter release to take a picture, the camera will wait that long before taking the photo.

Shutting off flash

Yes, but not in the Auto mode, where the camera decides whether or not it needs the flash. Switch to the P mode, which works like Auto except you have control over the flash, exposure, and other factors. See pages 26 and 42 of this manual.

Does the auto exposure go down to 30 secs? If you are getting 30 secs on B mode then the self timer will not work. Set the camera to full auto and then from the menu select self timer, you should have 2 options 2 sec and 10 sec. Then press the shutter

Is it normal for the D3000's screen to turn off with in 5 secs or less after i turn in on and take my first pic???

Assuming you haven't changed the auto-off timers, yes. The default time-out for image review is 4 seconds.

The auto-off timer settings are in the Setup menu. Press the MENU button, select the wrench icon, and scroll down.
