A little more triage would be in order before you take a knife to it. Starting with - what's the patient's name and model number? What source(s) produce the low sound? Have you referred to the manual(s)?

Find the manual and evaluate every indicator on the face to make sure you understand what they mean and how they might affect operations. Look for Speakers NOT enabled, Muting ON, a Tape or other input inadvertantly selected. If you fail to find the errant setting, treat it like a new install and set it up all over again according to the manual.

Once again, use medium volume for troubleshooting.

Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com
    http://www.retrevo.com/support/Onkyo-TX-...

See page13. Check the muting control.

    I have the original manual
The mute fm was off, but the tiny volume doesn't change if I turn the mute on or off
At max volume there is a VERY low sound - medium volume is just a little hum

If you do any more troubleshooting with max volume you will kill the speakers when that aha moment and flipped switch that's in the wrong postion unleashes the amp's full fury. Use medium volume for troubeshooting. Dead amps would emit NO sound at all.

Connect Sharp LCD tv to Onkyo TX8011 Receiver

The Onkyo TX8011 is a Stereo Receiver. Two ways to connect:
1) The HD Cable box should have an audio out (typically red and white). Connect this to the Obnkyo CD input (red and white). The volume may be controlled with the Cable box remote or Onkyo remote. The TV volume may be muted or ON.

2) Connect LCD TV's audio out to Onkyo TX8011's CD input.
This is not a great way to set up, as the TV volume, when moved high, will attenuate (over load) the amplifier, leading to a jarring sound on the speakers. To avoid this, the TV volume should be ALWAYS FIXED low.. say about 30%. Only the Onkyo's volume should be adjusted while watching.

Hope this helps.

I have Onkyo TX-SR304E receiver, it plays find on low volume, however when it is on 40 or above after some time the unit shuts off? How can I fix this problem? Regan

Check the impedance of your speakers. It sounds like the amp is getting overloaded and shutting down either for over current or over heating.
Most common issue is a partially blown speaker or crossover.
Sometimes it's just a rogue strand of wire, and reconnecting everything fixes it.
But measure the impedance on all the speakers anyways!

My onkyo tx-8222 suddenly stopped amplifying on both speakers and headphones. I can hear music faintly with the volume at max (just the pre-amp?). Time for a new amp?

Never use maximum volume for troubleshooting. The errant switch or control that you eventually find and flip will suddenly release the amp's full power and you'll destroy your speakers. If a signal isn't audible at 1/2 volume it's probably not there.

Look for a misplaced Mute or Tape Monitor control or Multichannel Analog Input selected.

There is a good chance that a common control may have developed a high-resistance or 'dead' spot through idleness and is causing your symptom. Turn the POWER OFF and operate every control throughout its range a number of times, especially rarely-used ones like Tape Monitors and the Mute control.

Turn the volume to something reasonable and see if that helped.

No volume coming through. I have a Panasonic tv

What sound from what source? Is the TV the source of the sound ? If so, why? The best TV-related sound would be had from the cable, dvd, bd or whatever else it is showing. Your TV could be the reason you cab't hear it.

What still works? FM? CD? Have you cracked the manual to see what it recommends? How about running through the basic speaker setup again to see how that works out.

Onkyo TX-DS 595 receiver surround channel unrealiable

How you power off the amp won't hurt it generally. I used to fix ONKYO amps under warranty, and I can tell you now, it will be full of dry solder joints. Take you unit to your local repairer, and they will resolder all the offending PCB's inside. This type of repair will fix 99% of strange audio noises and cutting in and out etc. for ONKYO recievers. Otherwise this is quite a good product.

VERY LOW VOLUME FROM SORROUND SPEEKERs

some surround sounds do not put out loud sounds except from the front speakers only. Try using different inputs to see if it makes a difference.

Very low ouput from subwoofer preout

The problem was that some subwoofers (inluding my velodyne model) cannot process the LFE signals through the line level inputs on its amps, so the other way to run your subwoofer is to run the front left and right speaker outputs from your receiver to the speaker-level inputs on your sub, and then plug your front and left speakers into the soeaker level outputs on the sub. you have to set the onkyo receiver to "Subwoofer: No". that way the LFE signals are sent through the front speaker channels and you will get the same BASS output as if using the line-level input. O So yes it does require a bit more speaker cable, but it works fine now.

Onkyo TX-DS838 Issues

The problem here is that the output amplifier section has a problem. This is detected internally and the system shuts down in a "protect" mode. The output section really only kicks in when you attempt to bring up the volume. Another possibility is a problem in the "front end" where DC current is being passed to the amp section. Without takeing measurements, it is difficult to determine the exact cause. This should be a relatively stright-forward repair for a service shop and should cost about $20-$40 in parts plus the local labor charge.
