Plug the drive into your computer. Go to "My Comptuer", and right click on the drive's image, and select "Format". In the options for formatting set the file system to "Fat32".

Please remember to backup anything on this drive, as formatting will delete it all.

In computer right click the hard drive, select format. On the dialog that opens, set the filesystem to FAT32, then format the drive. You're done. Be careful, doing this will delete everything on the hard disk.

SOURCE: Format from NTFS to FAT 32

You'll want to leave this drive in NTFS format as FAT32 has lots of limitations in cluster size and total drive size.

The issue with your DVD- Media Player has nothing to do with how you formatted an external 1TB HDD.

It's possible that the two occured at the same time for different reasons.

Xbox was not created to use external hard drives otherwise the software for it would be even bigger considering it is a gaming console. It might work if you use FAT but I can't say it for sure.

Right Click on your new drive in the Computer

Choose a File System (NTFS is ideal most cases) and give the new volume a name if you choose. You might like to call it something like "Portable Drive," or "Removeable Drive." If not, just take the defaults and click "OK."

You will get one last warning that you are about to format your drive and erase all data. Click OK to proceed. When you see the process has reached 100%, you are done and you're new external hard drive is ready to use!

How to Convert NTFS External Hard Drive to FAT32?

My friend Michael bought an external hard drive last month, yesterday he ran to me and ask how to convert external hard drive from NTFS to FAT32 safely and easily? I was so curious about why does he want to convert NTFS to FAT32; he said NTFS partition can't be read by DOS system. Since protecting data and files, I recommend him to convert external hard drive from NTFS to FAT32 with a third-party software-AOMEI Partition Assistant, which can convert hard drive from NTFS to FAT32 without data loss.

To computer users, NTFS and FAT32 are not strange. But seldom of them can tell what the difference between them. NTFS and FAT32 to partition are what DOC and TXT to text. In text, the file with DOC format can't be read by TXT application. Similarly, in some condition, not all files in different formatted partition can be read by same application. First, you'd better know some knowledge about NTFS and FAT32.

A Brief introduction of NTFS and FAT32

About FAT32

FAT 32 is one of partition format in windows system. It has 32bit file table, which strengthen FAT32's management to partition, and break through the limitation of 2GB space in every partition. Since the production cost of hard drive decreasing, the volume capacity is increasing. After applying FAT32 partition format, a big volume hard drive can be definite as a partition but not be divided into multiple partitions. It is good for management to hard drive. Now, FAT32 is replaced by NTFS.

About NTFS

NTFS is standard file system after Windows NT, 2000, XP, server 2003, server 2008, Vista, and 7. It replaces FAT to offer file system for Microsoft. NTFS make advanced on FAT and HPFS, such as to support metadata.
The difference between NTFS and FAT
As mentioned above, NTFS and FAT both are file system. However, NTFS is produced late than FAT32, but NTFS is more advanced in technology. In summary, the specific distinction are following below:
NTFS can support up to 64GB single file and 2048GB partition. FAT32 supports up to single file with 4GB and partition with 32G.
NTFS does not need Defragment your hard disk.
NTFS support to compress partition, folders and files.
NTFS takes a little cluster, which can help to manage space of hard drive effectively, and avoid wasting space of hard drive at the most extent.
In NTFS partition, you can share sources, folders and set access permissions on files. It is more secured than FAT32 partition.
How to know which partition format is suitable for you
As mentioned above, NTFS and FAT32 have its own advantages. When we choose which file system, you should consider the factors below:
Computer is installed with single system, or multiple systems.
The number and capacity of local installed hard disk.
Whether has consideration about security or not.
If computer is installed single system, and there is security to consider, you can select FAT32. Or NTFS is not bad choice absolutely.
Why need to convert NTFS External Hard Drive to FAT32?
NTFS and FAT32 are two different types of file systems, and both of them are commonly used and contain different characters. You may make conversions between the two types, and here we got several cases that you need to convert external hard drive to FAT32:
If your external hard drive is formatted in NTFS, you would not be able to access some files from DOS mode or Windows 9X, then you need to covert external hard drive to FAT or FAT32.
NTFS can't be recognized by many devices, such as Xbox 360, PS3, etc. in that case, you have to convert the external hard drive to FAT32 so that it can work with your devices.
There are more situations in which you need to convert external hard drive to FAT32, and there are different ways which you may realize the goal.
Methods to convert NTFS External hard drive to FAT32
At present, there are two main ways that you may convert external hard drive to FAT32, one is to convert to FAT32 with Windows built-in Disk Management, and another one is to convert to FAT32 with third-party software like AOMEI Partition Assistant. Let's see the details:

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to use the drive to your PS3 Console you can still do a Quick Format on the Hard Drive but make sure you select Fat32 File System type to be able for the Ps3 to detect the hard drive. Make sure you use Windows XP or Windows 7 on formatting the hard drive to Fat32 because Windows Vista dont have Fat32 it uses ExFat.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Trying to format a large external USB or Firewire hard drive to the FAT32 file system? Can't do it? Only see an option for formatting the drive using the NTFS file format? Well if you answered yes any of those questions, then you're at the right place.
I was recently trying to format my 1 TB MyBook external hard drive in Windows XP to FAT32 instead of the overly forced-upon NTFS format. Why? Well because I needed to connect it to a NAS device and the NTFS permissions were causing the NAS not to be able to access the drive. Simple solution is to use FAT32, no security, no problems. Though it's sometimes useful to format a USB drive in NTFS format.
Also, formatting a drive in FAT or FAT32 will allow it to be read by other operating systems, such as Mac, Linux, and older versions of Windows such as Windows 98.
Unfortunately, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 will only format a removable drive in FAT32 if it's less than 32GB! Hmmm...that pretty much cuts out ALL modern external hard drives!
However, Windows can format a drive that is larger than 32GB in FAT32, but you have to use the DOS command prompt. However, if you have a drive that is 1TB or larger, you may still get an error saying "The volume is too big for FAT32".
In that case, you can use a free program called SwissKnife that will allow you to format an external hard drive that is up to 2TB in size. Let's go through both methods. In case you are having problems getting your external hard drive to show up in Windows, read my article on how to change the drive letter for an external drive in Windows.
Format external drive in FAT32 using DOSOpen a command window by going to Start, then Run and typing in CMD.

commandprompt-thumb.png
Now type in the following command at the prompt:

format /FS:FAT32 X:
Replace the letter X with the letter of your external hard drive in Windows. Windows will go ahead and begin formatting the drive in FAT32!

Format external hard drive in FAT32 using SwissKnifeSwissKnife is a nifty little program that is completely free and that you can use to format many types of external drives such as USB, Firewire, PCMIA, SATA and SCSI. You can also use it to create partitions on an external hard drive and it formats faster than Windows.

So next time you want to format a hard drive in FAT32 and Windows only gives you an option for NTFS, make sure to follow one of the two method mentioned above. Enjoy!

Hello, I bought WD My Book Essential 1 TB but whenever i connect it to my Samsung DVD player it doesn't get recognized. Any help? Thanks

Most probably the format of your hard drive is NTFS. Samsung DVD players only recognize FAT32 formats. If you have the patience and resources try to change the format of your hard drive to FAT32. Better yet since it is a 1TB try to create a partition one NTFS and one FAT32 because FAT32 cannot go beyond 4GB for files.

Hope this helps.

Check the file system format on the flash drive (possibly FAT32) and have the hard disk drive formatted with the same file system.

Note that Windows can not format with FAT32 any hard drives that are bigger than 32 gb, you will need to do it in MAC OS or in other operating systems that support formatting large hard disk drives with FAT32.
