I can't recieve fax - Canon Pixma MP500 All-In-One InkJet Printer

  • Anonymous Mar 03, 2011

Please clarify what happens when you try to receive a fax? Do you hear the phone line ring? Does the display on the fax machine show "in coming call" or "ringing"? Do you hear it ring but the fax machine does not pick up?

You need to verify that the phone cord is connected to the right place on the fax machine. There could be 2 - 3 places to connect a phone cable. One is usually for the phone line and its marked "line". Phone line means the line from the box to the fax machine straight from the wall. The next one will say "phone" or show a picture of a telephone. This one is for an outgoing phone cord that connects to your home telephone. The third one is usually not marked or does not exist at all. You want to make sure that you are connecting your wall line into your fax machine and an out going phone cord to your telephone. Phone plugs to fax machine and wall cord goes to fax machine.

You can verify its set up right by dialing a fax number and hitting start. If its connected right you will hear the dial tone and then the number being dialed. If you dont hear a dial tone FIRST before you hear the numbers being dialed - then you know you have the phone cord in the wrong place on the fax machine. Switch the phone cables if this is the case and try dialing again until you hear a dial tone.

When you hear the dial tone - then your ready to fax. Here is the next step to make that happen!

In order to receive an incoming fax - you have to set up the number of rings before the fax picks up the call - and then turn the "automatic pick up" on by pressing the "auto" button on the printer. If the auto pick up is not turned on, the fax will not pick up the incoming call. When auto is on, it will pick up all incoming calls as if they were faxes. You can also stand next to your fax machine when your expecting an incoming fax and press the "start" button to manually command the fax to pick up an incoming call. When your fax is on and picks up an incoming call - you will see the display change to "connecting" and then "receiving". If there is a problem with the incoming fax - the machine will display the error (only briefly) before hanging up and printing an error report (if you have it set to print all errors in the fax default set up options).

You can respond to my questions by going to your post on Fixya's website and clicking on the "reply" option. I have not posted this an a solution - I am sending it as a request for clarification only. If any of the above solves your problem - please post feedback and accept my answer so I know that it worked for you ok?

The MP500 is not a fax machine. If you want to send and receive faxes using the printer, you need to have a dial-up modem in your computer with a telephone line connected. The computer then needs some kind of fax application like Microsoft Fax, which does the actual sending and receiving. The printer is just used as a scanner when you send, and to print received faxes.

If you have all this connected already and you can't receive, check your incoming telephone line and fax software settings to be sure the line is answering correctly.

I can send but cannot recievefax. Fax is on SLEEP all the time.

The machine is set with the sleep mode as a default. The fax part can be changed to recieve a fax by pressing the fax mode button. Press it until it says Fax only, not F/T. F/T means Fax/Telephone. This mode would make it to where you have to pick up the reciever and press start when a fax comes in. The Fax only mode means it will pick up everytime a fax comes in automatically. Let me know if this was helpful. Please give my helping a rating. Thanks!

Still can't get fax not to pick up when answering machine is connected.

if you have the fax-575 there should be a TAD setting.

This is the setting you would use if you're using an answering machine on the same phone line as your fax machine.

To set the Recieve Mode :

Press Recieve Mode. The LCD display shows your current selection.

Continue to press Recieve Mode until your new selection appears. After 2 seconds the screen returns to the date and time display, along with your new Recieve Mode setting.

The 4 Recieve modes are Fax Only, Fax/Tel, TAD:Answering Machine, Manual.

Hope this helps!!!

Fax will not recieve

DR mode means that Distinctive Ring is set to on which will force your fax machine to manual receive. Turn DR off and you can set it to whatever mode you want.
