How do I secure my network?
Securing your network is an important step in yourset up process and doesn't have to take a lot of time. Learn how to keep yournetwork secure by reviewing the information below. If you have a wired or wireless network, it'simportant to follow some basic steps to keep your network safe from intruders. Here's how you can protect your network: Wired and Wireless Network Security Use YourFirewall
Youshould use both the firewall built into your gateway/router, and a reputablesoftware firewall (McAfee, ZoneAlarm, etc) installed on your wireless networkdevice. SetPassword on Your Router/Gateway
Setyour Administrator password on the gateway/router. Anyone who gains access toyour network can use the default router/gateway password and can lock you outand or grant themselves more privileges. If you accidentally forget yourgateway/router password, you can reset the device back to default settings bypressing the reset button on the back of your device. Wireless Network Security EnableEncryption
Let'sstart with the basics. Most of the wireless gateways/ routers have theencryption disabled by default. Make sure to enable either WEP (WiredEquivalent Privacy) or WPA (WiFi Protected Access) wireless encryption. UsingWPA is recommended because it's more secure, but is sometimes a bit harder toset up than WEP. If you want your wireless network to really be secure, WPA isthe preferred method. Important! We do not recommend disablingEncryption. Make sure you are using WEP or WPA for your wireless network. ChangeYour Gateway/Router SSID name
(WirelessNetwork Name) refers to the name of your wireless connection that you see onAvailable Wireless Connections while trying to connect from your computer.Changing the name itself doesn't protect your completely but it may discouragesomeone from hacking your network. Don't use something like your name, address, birth date, or other things that make it easy for someone to identify you. Ifyou leave it '2wire2701' (or whatever the default is on your gateway/router),your computer automatically connects to every other network it encounters withthe same name, and not every wireless network is a good and secure thing toconnect to. Check the SSID on your AT&T provided gateway/router. Do NotDisable SSID Broadcast
Donot disable the SSID Broadcast feature of your gateway/router. Hackers havesophisticated tools that can easily get information, so disabling SSIDBroadcast won't improve your security. If you disable SSID Broadcast, it makesit difficult to connect other computers and devices, like wireless gamingconsoles, printers etc., to your network. Additionally, if you have SSIDBroadcast disabled, hackers can use technology to pretend to be yourgateway/router and gain access to your computer. EnableMAC Address Filtering
Ifyou want to go one step further in locking down your network there is anotherstep that only allows access to trusted devices. You can enable MAC Address(Media Access Control) filtering on your gateway/router. The MAC address is aunique identifier attached to the network adapter on a device like yournotebook computer or wireless gaming console. If you enable Mac Addressfiltering on your network, you need to find and enter into your gateway/routerthe 12-character MAC address of every system that connects to the network. Thiscan be time consuming to set up, especially if you have a lot of wirelessdevices and if there are a lot of different users on your network. NetworkSecurity Tips - Create a strong gateway/router admin password.Use something hard to guess that contains both letters and numbers. Specialcharacters such as *#%$ etc. are not supported by most gateways/routers. Thereis no maximum length. However, the longer the key, the better to keep yournetwork safe. - Change your WEP key once a month. If someone doesfigure out how to access your network, they will be locked out after you updateit. - On public Wi-Fi Networks from your home/officemake sure web sites you visit that require username or passwords are secure. You can check whether a web site is secure by looking in the browser's addressbar. A secure web site address starts with "https".

A manual for the router can be found here
Instructions for setting up a secure wireless network can be found on page 27 - under Customising Security Settings.
Make sure you use the "custom encryption key" option, and specify you're own passphrase

I would suggest using WPA-PSK authentication (if possible), as it is more secure
Hope this helps

Ip address wrong, showing 192.168.254.1

Hi,
Solution Overview
This article explains how you can avoid having to run the Wireless Configuration Utility or Wireless Setup Assistant (Macintosh) after making changes to the router's security settings. The need to change these settings can arise if users forget their network key/passphrase or router web server password or if you have security concerns.
Printer response to security settings changes
The printer will respond with a flashing orange (pattlnk_6172008_1844-orgblksml.gif) Wi-Fi indicator light after the following actions are performed on the network or router/access point (AP):

  • -A change to the Service Set Identifier (SSID) or network name.

  • -A change to the security type (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2 personal).

  • -A change to the security network key/passphrase.

  • -A hard reset of the router followed by entry of security values that are different from the original values.

  • -The printer is moved to a network (AP) that has different security values but already has installed drivers and created ports. NOTE: Port reconfiguration may be required in this case. Click here for instructions.

In order to rejoin (associate and authenticate) the wireless network (WLAN), the wireless client (printer) has to be reconfigured with the router's new SSID, security type, and network key. This requires connecting the USB configuration cable to the host computer and running the Wireless Configuration Utility or Wireless Setup Assistant to apply the new security settings on the printer's wireless network adapter.
Solution: Change the printer settings first
Change the security settings on the printer while it is still communicating on the network before making the changes on the router. Understand that this will cause a temporary change in the Wi-Fi indicator light from pattlnk_6172008_1952-tn_grnsolproof.jpg to pattlnk_6172008_1844-orgblksml.gif. After you have made equivalent changes on the router, the printer's Wi-Fi indicator light will return to pattlnk_6172008_1952-tn_grnsolproof.jpg.
Procedure: How to change security settings via the embedded web server
If you change your AP security settings frequently, this procedure is for you.

  1. Open your web browser application and enter the printer IP address into the web address field, i.e. http://ip_address.

  2. Click on Configuration.

  3. Click on Wireless.

  4. Enter the SSID, security type/encryption, and network key that will be used to configure the router.

  5. Click Submit.
