Top portion of screen has black and horizontal/vertical white lines. When I turn it on screen is dark gray and unreadable. When pushed to turn pages, lights up briefly, then goes dark gray again. Worked fine this morning; nothing happened to it and it does this now. What should I do?

On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open Safari, then tap . Tap Private to turn private browsing off. While Private Browsing is on, Safari appears black or dark instead of white or gray. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier on an iPad, open Safari, tap to open a new tab, then tap Private

Is the battery very empty?

Swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen so it displays the controls. The one at top right with a padlock in a circle with an arrow in the clockwise direction is the orientation lock. Tap it once to lock.

If you hold your phone upright while taking a video, you've surely seen the horrific end results. When you try to play the video back on any other display, roughly 70 percent of the screen is occupied by black bars.

There is probably a rotation screen lock in the settings if this is on the screen will not rotate when the tablet is turned to the desired position the option should be in the settings menu need more info to determine where in the settings it is at

It's broken :(

There are companies who will replace the screen for about the same price as a brand new Kindle BASIC. personally I would suggest:
- buy a new Kindle BASIC for 59gbp;
or
- download any of the FREE kindle apps and just finish your library reads for free whilst you look around for a replacement.

If you want a TABLET rather than a eReader remember ANY tablet will download the free Kindle app so you can read your books on a Fire or a ASUS or a NEXUS or a iPad or anything really :)

Drag your finger down from the top to get the Quick Menu icons along to top of the screen.
Top LEFT of the Quick Menu is a Circle icon. Tap it to turn on/off the Screen rotation lock.

(If 1 finger does not work then use two fingers. You have turned on Accessibilty. Go to Settings / Accessibility to turn on/off)

If your display looks worse, you should contact Amazon Kindle support. This is the current state-of-the-art for E-Ink displays. In comparison, liquid crystal displays (LCD) have a slightly better contrast, but cannot show shades of gray at all, they need electricity all the time, and become much harder to read in brighter environments.

Make sure you have enough light while reading, I find it more comforting to the eyes.
