Go to the main ps3 menu and go to settings(second from the left) then sound settings(fourth from the bottom) click audio output settings select HDMI from the list
Also try blowing in the holes for the hdmi in both your tv and ps3 to clear out any dust

You need to select High definition output on the PS3. Connect it via hdmi and via standard lead switch the tv to standard so you can see the picture then select high definition output. Switch over to hdmi and you should see a picture

Want to use surround sound and use dhmi cords for picture and surround sound

You will need 2 hdmi cables the ps3 a tv with an hdmi port and a audio receiver with hdmi in and out.
1:>First connect the ps3 to the tv with the A/V cables.
2:>Turn the system on and the tv on, get to the ps3 dashboard.
3:>Under the settings tab select (display settings)
4:>Select (video output settings)
5:>Do not disconnect the A/V.
6:>Connect the hdmi cable to the ps3 and tv.
7:>Then select hdmi and select change, this gives you 30 seconds to switch the tv over to the hdmi channel. Once done and you get a signal select (yes).
8:>Disconnect the A/V cable.
9:>Select what inut your tv will support 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p. You can select more than one and even all if it is supported by your tv.
10:>Then select hdmi for your audio output, but since your ps3 is connected to the tv only select linear PCM 2channel. Check for sound on the tv's speakers. If check is good then proceed.
11:>Power down the tv and ps3, disconnect the hdmi cable.
12:>Connect the hdmi cable from the ps3 to the input of the audio receiver and the hdmi from the tv to the output on the receiver.
13:>Turn the ps3 on, the receiver on and the tv on. Make sure the receiver is on the right channel. If it is you will see the ps3 come on the tv, and have sound on the main speakers of the receiver and tv.
14:>At this step you should be able to see and here the ps3's dashboard. Now to setup surround.
15:>Scroll to the settings tab and select (sound settings).
16:>Select (audio output settings)
17:>Select (hdmi)
18:>Select (automatic) this will select the basic surround settings that all receivers have.
19:>Hit enter and exit.
20:>From here test the surround with a game or movie.
If for any reason you should need to restart the process, simply plug the A/V cable back in and do a video reset. All of a sudden, no sound on PS3, great pic though. Using HDMI cable...have checked all connections, reset PS3, etc. Still no sound! Guy from Sony said my HDMI cable(Monster) could be bad?! No sound, but...

I agree with the guy from Sony, the reason for this is the HDMI cable should support the transfer of audio and video over the same cable, if your only getting video over it, the cable could be defective, or its possible that you have another cable in the spot where speakers should go that is over riding the HDMI.

What exactly is the HDMI cable plugged into? Is it direct from TV to PS3?
If you have a stereo set lying around that supports HDMI - try having it run through that.
Is the TV muted? check if you can get sound while watching normal TV channels.
Worst comes to worst, use RCA Plugs remembering that the composite video is (yellow) and stereo audio is (white and red). You don't need to connect the composite video, but connect the stereo audio.

If this did not solve the problem, please leave a comment and I'll get back to you once I can =)

Connecting to surround sound system

Hi to connect your ps3 to your tv all you would need is a hdmi to hdmi connector which would mean the sound would come straight out of your tv. The sound comes directly out of the hdmi cable. If you want to connect the ps3 to an external reciver you might want to get an AV reciver with HDMI inputs. This would connect to your tv and you can switch channels to different sources connected into the receiver, also they come with very good seperate speakers so you wouldnt have to use you telly speakers and you can connect your directv box into it aswell.

Alternatively you can connect the audio phono outputs from your AV multiout connector on your ps3 (the cable should be provided) to a seperate sound system with phono AUX inputs, these are found on most soundsystems but check with whoever your buying it from. But this means that you cant use the HDMI output of your PS3 for video just the AV multiout video signal (which is a bit rubbish, so I suggest the latter solution.

Hope this solves your problem
