I have just purchased a Thomson tg585v8 and am unable to log into the Thomson Gateway. I have tried all the usual defaults like; admin, admin; Administrator, Cp********, Administrator, "blank" etc. I have also pressed the reset button on the back of the modem, and this still has not reset the password to the normal default. Any help would be greatly appreciated

you do need to hold the button for awhile sometimes
Username: admin
Password: The serial number on the bottom of your router router. It begins with the letters CP.
this should get you in!!

Check your network settings
Start, control panel, networking and sharing center. Click on your connection, properties. Click on TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6 and click on properties. Make sure the settings say to obtain IP address automatically and also for DNS, then reboot the modem and computer.

You did not specify if you are using a router.

Reset the router and start the configuration from the begining. There's no need to "crack" the password or user name if you physically have the device.
Make sure you write down and save the password after you change it from its default or you will have to do this over again.

You will need to know the administrator password of your Thomson TG782T.

Go to a computer that is currently hooked up to internet through that device, hit the start menu, go to run, and type cmd in the field and hit enter. When the command prompt comes up, type: (ipconfig) without the parentheses and hit enter. You should see "default gateway" and a set of numbers next to it. Like: (888.888.8.8) only different numbers of course. Open up internet explorer and type those numbers in the address bar at the top where you normally put in a website's name. Once you hit enter, it should ask you for a password, the default username is usually: admin the default password is also usually: password, or a set of 0's, or admin again. If you can get past that point you should be logged onto your device and be able to change anything you want. Let me know.

try IPconfig/all
usually the defaut gatway is the router own address. i.e. 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

You need to log on to the router using the default gateway.
Go to Start menu -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
type ipconfig
Note the default gateway
open your browser, in the address bar type in the default gateway ip address - like 192.168.1.254 --- or whatever the IP is.

That should open your router config pages... if it asks you for a user name and password... default usernames depend on your ISP usually, but try for the username Admin, admin, Administrator, administrator and for the password try the same as the username or leave blank... If you have no luck contact your ISP for logging on details.

A web page will open - go to
Toolbox
Game And Application Sharing
At top right click configure
Make sure UPnP and Extended Security are selected if you have those options
Then at the bottom
Create a New Game or Application
from there you just need to select which protocols you need to work with or select ANY
Enter the port you want opened
and add the same port number to the destination / trigger port.

That should be you. If not you need to telnet into you router
Telnet <default gateway IP>
and type Menu
