When taking a picture with my Pentax Optic M10, there are suddenly lines across the screen. When I attempt to view the pictures on the computer, the card is not recognized. When I put a new card in the camera, the same thing happens with the picture. When I view the card (both old and new) in another camera, I get a "card error" message. Is the camera hooped?

This could be a bad sensor. Did you expose it to any laser light?

Are the lines vertical or horizontal on the pictures? Please let me know so I can narrow down the exact problem.

I am sorry you having that problem, and even more sorry I do not have a solution...On my Pentax Optio M10 batteries rechargeable or fresh alkaline only seem to last about 5-6 pictures before the camera deems them flat without charge and shuts off...it is so annoying I assume yours is possibly doing the same.
I suspect this to be a camera problem, I also notice the camera dos not recognize all rechargeable batteries some of them do not even get acknowledge.
If anyone gets a solution help us both....

OK, this sounds to me like an CCD error. This is unfortunately once of the more expensive components on a camera to be repaired.

I would suggest that you take this camera to your nearest repair store, explain to them what the problem is, and let them let you know how much it will cost to replace the CCD.

Try the steps below.

Remove the Memory card
try to take picture w/out the card
if there are lines, transfer picture on the computer.

If lines exist when pics are transferred to the computer, call 1.800.235.6325 for repair.

canon has a recall on this camera. call them and they will send you a box to send it back. If you are one of the lucky ones the will send you a canon s5is back...really nice camera

It's the CCD in the camera. You can take into a repair shop and see if it can be replaced.

Same's happened with my Pentax WR, and a mate's Optio...

You're not alone, and we don't know why - we're gonna send them back to Pentax.
