I have a Whirlpool model EC3JHAXRL13 side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. The plastic part where the pin goes into the dispenser housing is broken off but every website I have looked at says that the dispenser housing is not available to order. I can't use the ice dispenser because air gets in and partially melts the ice,so it won't dispense. I have had to tape the opening closed.

SOURCE: whirlpool pin retainer is broken on ice dispenser

You don't have to replace the whole door. There is a kit that comes with instuctions. You can get it at www3.sears.com and the part # is 2206423 and switches over to #8201649 and is called door mechanism assembly. It is $42.99. Use # 2206423 for lookup purposes. Hope this helps.

First pull out the ice bucket and close the door.  Set for cubed ice.  Press the button for ice to come out and listen for a loud clunk noise.  That is the sound of the solenoid.  You can open the door, hold the light switch and press the button and watch for the solenoid moving up and down.  Solenoid is at the back of the freezer in a little square opening where the rod on the ice bucket goes into.  If that solenoid is moving ok then put the bucket back in while the solenoid is in the down position and cubes should work.  If solenoid is not working then it will need to be replaced.  Let me know what you find.

The front cover is snapped on. There should be two slots in the bottom of the cover. Put a wide screw driver in the slots one at a time and pry out. It snaps off very hard.

SOURCE: whirlpool refrigerator ice dispenser no longer workds

Ok, I show parts that are available for that model, sounds like the control board is defective for your dispenser, or possibly the Ice maker control board. It also could be a break in the wiring or the control itself. Below is a break down for those parts, wiring and the control behind the push to dispense ice or water. Hope it is not that control because some places don't provide that part. Now if it's a connection problem that we can find, I will do mu best to help you solve this.Could you insure the model number is correct as this is very important? [email protected]

I have an Admiral side by side fridge freezer model number GC2027HXKW and the water dispenser is not working. The ice is still being made but I cannot get any water to come out

Hello Rosemary:

Are you good with a multi-meter and tools?

You either have a bad contact switch or the mounting pins holding the switch are broken. This switch is behind the dispenser cover. On the bottom of the cover there are two slots for a flat head screw driver to pop the cover off. There are several plastic tabs on the cover sides and top that you must be careful not to break. If you have a plastic round piece where the water dispenses you will have to remove this. Squeeze at the top and the piece. There are tabs that will release. After you have removed the cover there is a touch pad control board - inspect for burn marks. You will need a small screw driver to pry the electrical connector free. Set the cover assembly aside. You will see a green control board. Ground yourself by touching something metal. Static will knock out a control board.
There are several screws holding the board. Remove the board. Know you can see these small contact switches. One on the left side for the ice dispenser and one on the left for the water dispenser. Inspect the housing upon which they are mounted on for broken pins. The contact switch easily slides off these pins.
So, either the control board, the contact switch or it's housing is broken.

Or, you have a bad water solenoid valve. This is located in the back lower left hand corner of your refrigerator. You need to un plug your refrigerator. Pull it out far enough were you can remove the bottom cover. There are 2 solenoid valves. The solenoid valve with the water line running up the back of your refrigerator is the ice maker solenoid, the other is your water dispenser valve. You need to take the wire connectors off the valve. Using a multi-meter check for continunity.
I am sorry I am not their to repair your unit,
Peter

The ice dispenser rubber door or seal does not close allowing warm air back into the freezer and causing frost buildup. How difficult is that rubber seal to replace.

Remove the top freezer hinge cover and disconnect the plug there . This will remove power to the door . At the bottom of the dispenser cover , but inside the dispensing area , between the grill and the cover , insert a small screwdriver about 1 " in on both sides , and push down and inward , forcing the bottom of the cover outward . Do this carefully , due to plastic tabs on the dispenser cover . After bottom is loose , lift upward , to release the top plastic slots of the cover . Disconnect the plug on the cover . Remove the 2 screws holding the dispenser housing , and slide forward . You should now be able to see the door flap , return spring and pin . You will have to see which part(s) are needed or what the situation is . Maybe pin slid out , maybe the clear plastic ice guide , connected to the dispenser activator arm , broke loose , obstructing the closure of the door flap . Come back with your findings and a model number , and myself or another expert , will be glad to give you part numbers .

WHIRLPOOL ICEMAKER DESPENCER STOPPED WORKING.

It is either the motor going bad or the switch at the ice lever. The little micro switch that is activated by the ice lever is likely held in place by two little, week, plastic pins. They break easily. After one pin breaks, the switch can still be close by the lever, but it is hit and miss. It is a ****** to replace the bracket unless you have some experiance. One other long shot would be the freezer door light switch that shuts power off to the dispenser when the door is open.

Whirlpool pin retainer is broken on ice dispenser

this is easy. there is a small area beside where the piece broke off. bend a small peice of metal coat hanger at a 90 degree angle, (this is so you can make your new hole on the correct line) heat the end with a lighter, burn a smallhole thru this area beside where the previous hole existed. now throw away the old pin that you were using and use a piece of coat hanger cut to the right length. on one end bend about one half inch to 90 degree angle, feed thru new hole and thru your spring and flap and thru to opposite side hole and lastly make small bend to keep wire from sliding out. ta da, fixed. problem solved for about two cents. i have successfully repaired many of these doors.

Ice machine works great, but will not dispense

I just repaird a unit with this same symptom. Yours may be the same. The plastic part that holds the switch was broken (pins). See the diagram at http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/Whirlpool/KAZVHYR3.gif Item 15 is the part. The switch sets on a coupld pins and the pins break easily, thus the switch falls off and the dispensor lever can't operate it. If you look up inside with a flashlight you can see the switch, etc. and should be able to tell if it's held in place properly.

Problem with ice dispenser in side by side refrigerator

Bensmom, the housing that holds the flapper pin probably cracked causing the flapper not to seal. Whirlpool use to have to replace the whole door at one time because the dispenser housing was a non serviceable part. That got too expensive so they came out with a kit to remedy the problem. The kit comes with instructions but you have to be patient and take your time. You want to determine first if this is the actual problem. You can do so by looking up into the dispenser and seeing if the pin retainer is cracked or broken off. I have done a bunch of these and the kit works great. I hate the job though. Part number for the kit is 8201756. I tried to attach a picture of the kit, but I guess the file was too big...Catriver..post back.
