For the photo transfer, remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader. Some PCs have these build in. If not, you can get one from any electronics store. The card readers plug into your PC's USB slot and the card shows up as a drive on the PC. You can copy & paste (or drag & drop - your preference) to move the pictures from the memory card to your PC.

For the battery - did you charge it before use? Most batteries ship at about 30 to 50% capacity.

Low battery showing replacing batteries does not solve problem

The flashing low battery symbol is the way Canon film cameras showed that the camera has had an error and has stopped functioning. It can have multiple causes - but for a quick check remove the lens, turn off the camera and then turn it back on - see if the symbol stops flashing. A problem with the lens can also cause this problem (usually a failure of the aperture unit)

Brand new battery won't hold charge. Camera is three years old. I bought an extra battery when I bought the camera. They both seemed to go bad at the same time, so I recently bought two new lithium...

if this happens even to new batteries, it may no longer be an issue with the batteries, but it can be an issue with the camera itself. check the maximum number of shots that the camera can take with the batteries per its specification. if it should produce more, it would be a good ide ato check with Canon to have the camera checked.

I have a Canon Ixus 60 and the low battery indicator flashes most of the time - even on a fully charged battery. Is my camera destined for the graveyard?

No, but the battery may be ready to be buried. The rechargeable battery is only meant to last a couple years maximum, then should be replaced. If the age of the battery is about the same as the camera, then this is your likely problem. Fortunately, there are many inexpensive generic alternatives for your battery these days. Here are some from Amazon. Performance varies among the generics, so make sure you read the user reviews before purchasing.

Photos from Ixus 100 won't display on laptop after transfer - may be a problem with the SDHC card? Can see pics on camera but not on computer - other sdhc card transferred without a problem

This is often down to a lack of battery power - check the charge level.  Level may be OK for the moment of time you need to take a pic, but will not support a long transfer operation.
Its always best to use a card-reader. If the computer can "see" the card, then any photo-program should read the card.

Canon ixus 50 unable to delete photos from card

If the card is a removable memory card, take it out and use a adapter on your computer.  Format the card on your computer then put it back into your camera.  It should be ok after formatting on PC.

Unidentified images

I have the same problem with my Canon Powershot SX110IS. images dissapear with the notation "unidentified image". I brought my camera in to a local camera shop, and they were able to save the lost images. They told me I had an inexpensive, low quality memory card that is causing this problem. I upgraded to a high quality one and haven't had the problem since.
