Clean the carberater the carberater is the number one problem for craftmen lawnmowers pay close attention to where the springs are hooked there are several holes the spring can go in take it apart slow and clean every littel hole and put it back together take your time dont get in a hurry its not to hard just time consuming then anythaing sholdent take a newbie more than 2 or 3 hours max me half an houre
two things can be doing this ,
(1) fuel tank pick up is broken in half and works till gas works it way down to break , proof of this is when u add more gas and it starts right back up
(2) breakdown in ignition system , this can happen in a few places (if I knew your model number I can tell u more) eventually It will fail and never restart
I'd be tempted to shield the spring from the heat of the exhaust - is there any way to pop rivet on a piece of aluminium sheet and bend it to not impede the operation of the clutch?
I bought mine in Jan 2005 and today it did the exact same thing....doesn't go away. Seems like a 5 yr. lifespan on these.

this is most probably the Crank Angle Sensor 'CAS" if you pour cold water over the front of the engine by the main pully it may help it start right away
