I recently installed Windows 7 on my desktop computer and it does not seem to recognize my Maxtor external hard drive. Is there some update that I should install?

No, windows should have seen it right off the bat. See if the drive is showing in the device manager with an " ! " on it. if so, right click and uninstall it, then unplug and reconnect the USB cable.

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.
If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.
Do you have another computer you can plug it into? The problem could be with your USB. If it is, see what updates you installed and then removed that may have affected that. You can also go to the manufacturers web site and download the original firmware or updated firmware files.
There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. What OS are you using? Windows 98SE does not always recognize exterrnal hard drives. Try the external HD on a computer running Windows XP and see if that works. If it works on WinXP and not Win98SE or possibly WinME the External HD is good.
