You will have to take the machine apart somewhat, or at least to the point of being able to disconnect and remove the usb port. Here's a link to the D600 service manual download. It will guide you through the breakdown process.

No, it's not the only way, if you have an unused PCMCIA port in your notebook. The width of the PCMCIA port is about the height of a credit-card, and the height of that port is about the thickness of a few credit-cards.

Purchase a PCMCIA adapter that has two or three USB ports.
Insert the PCMCIA adapter into the slot,
and connect your USB device to one of the USB ports.

USB PORT NOT WORKING.

Both USB ports use the same driver, so if one works and one doesn't, you have a mechanically bad port. You'll need to replace the hardware to solve the problem. There are usually a lot of bad D600 motherboards on Ebay. Or try to find just the USB port you need. Fairly simple replacement task, but laptop dis-assembly will be required to reach the part.

Hi Roger,

The Windows command you used to uninstall the USB port is correct. If they all work bar one, then i think its safe to say it's possibly a hardware issue.

The only other fix i can think of is to update the BIOS with the latest version from the Dell support website.

Good luck.

I need to replace a usb port. I have bought a new usb board, but want an idea how to go about replacing the old board before leaping in cold.

Hi,
If you are refering to the Dell latitude D600 laptop . This system doesnot have a daughter USB board. The USB ports are on the motherboard itself. Refer the service manual below
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd600/sm/index.htm

If you are seeking help for a desktop, You need to open the cover from the tower. And connect the USB card on the white long PCI slots on the motherboard.

The usb of my dell latitude c400 notebook is malfunctioning

Unfortunately, I have seen this many times. One of the major problems with the C400 model was the USB port failing. I have had many of them replaced under warranty, and I have repaired some. The USB port breaks loose from the mother board and stops working. It is possible to SOMETIMES disassemble the laptop enough to get to the port and re-solder the USB port connections. But is is a slow process for experienced people. And it does not work all of the time. i know that this is not the answer that you wanted.

Good luck with it.

MotherBoard gone wild

You can replace it. But how good are you with Soldering?

The easiest (and least challenging fix) is to buy a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card. It'll fit right in your PCMCIA Slot and give you full USB 2.0 (I think your model is only 1.1 if I'm not mistaken)

They run about $20-$30 max for one of them. Just do an eBay search. They can also be ordered in at most computer and specialty laptop stores.
