When to replace control arm bushings

Usually when the bushings go bad you will hear a heavy clunking noise when breaking, full lock turning, and or going over bumps.

Its best to replace in pairs and check for the ball joint if there is play or torn boot you should replace the whole arm.

Hope that helps!

How to change the control arm on a 96 thunderbird?

UPPER CONTROL ARM:

Do not disassemble the upper arm. If the ball joint or bushings are faulty, or the upper arm is damaged, the entire upper arm must be replaced.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Remove the front wheels. Support the lower control arm assembly with a floor jack.
  3. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator tool.
  4. Remove the self-locking nuts from the upper arm anchor bolts. Remove the upper arm from the vehicle.

Do not disassemble the upper arm. If the ball joint or bushings are faulty, or the upper arm is damaged, the entire upper arm must be replaced.

P 2647"A" Rocker Arm Actuator

Your going to need a air pressure regulator or better yet if the ECM found fault price it and replace it
  1. Start the engine, and let it run for 5 minutes, then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  3. Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC).
  4. Move the intake secondary rocker arm A for the No. 1 cylinder. The secondary rocker arm A should move independently of the secondary rocker arm B.
    1. If the intake secondary rocker arm A moves freely, go to step 5.
    2. If the intake secondary rocker arm A does not move, remove the secondary rocker arms as an assembly, then check that the pistons in the secondary rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm needs replacing, replace the secondary rocker arms as an assembly, then retest.
    3. Repeat step 4 on the remaining intake secondary rocker arms with each piston at TDC. When all the secondary rocker arms pass the test, go to step 6.
    4. Check that the air pressure on the shop air compressor gauge indicates over 400 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi).
    5. Inspect the valve clearance.
    6. Install a 10 x 1.0 mm adapter to the inspection hole, then connect the air pressure regulator
  5. With the specified air pressure applied, move the intake secondary rocker arm A for the No. 1 cylinder. The secondary rocker arm A and secondary rocker arm B should move together. If the intake secondary rocker arm A does not move, remove the secondary rocker arms as an assembly, and check that the pistons in the secondary rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm needs replacing, replace the secondary rocker arms as an assembly, then retest.

Want to know the relationship between the rear trailing arm and the control arm. If you had the rear trailing arm fixed because of recall then 2 months later they say the control arm came loose and broke...

The recall for your vehicle may or may not have included replacement of the trailing arm. The recall says that the trailing arm is to be "inspected" then it will be replaced, or modified at the discresion of the person performing the inspection. If it was "replaced", it would require the control arms to be disconnected and reconnected. If it was only "modified" there would have been no disassembly of the control arms required. See the picture below. The picture shows the rear suspension parts. Notice that the upper control arm and the lower control arm bolt to the trailing arm. (which is what also houses the hub and bearing with the wheel speed sensor.) I hope this helps you to resolve your issue.
