Difference between ide,sata,scsi harddisks?

Does your RAID SATA have a boot sector? Sounds like your trying to boot from a non bootable configured RAID.

It's a SATA harddrive, not SCSI.

Your harddrive has the Operating System on it.
A new harddrive will not have an O/S on it.
(Windows XP is an example of an O/S)

It would be much easier to install the harddrive you wish into an external enclosure, and plug the external enclosure's USB cable into your T180.

3 and 1/2 inches across in width, for a desktop harddrive.

If all the motherboard has is IDE connectors,then you can with an add in card. To do this you need to run the installation floppy during a fresh windows installation when it prompts for 3rd party scsi or raid drivers. I'd take the easy road & install a slave drive on the IDE or run an external hard drive in a usb port. Or the ultimate option,build a system using a board with sata on it. Prices are way down on hardware in general,but it's not going to stay that way.

IF the connector doesn't fit it MAY be the data buss is NOT compatible.

You should verify that the data is the same such as IDE which is different thab SCSI which is also used.

You dod not put model numbers so that any of us could investigate for you. Find the model numbers and then use Google to find what data format the unitss are such as IDE, SATA, or SCSI and make sure they are the same.

yes indeed nowadays laptops are designed for windows vista and better versions as these are equipped with SATA harddisks. to install windows xp in these systems u need to change SATA settings in bios which can be done by 1->pressing F2/DEL key during the starting acer empower people screen which v get once v switch on the laptop 2->in the BIOS screen go to MAIN tab by pressing right arrow 3->scroll down till u get SATA mode->press enter .two options ll be available 1.AHCI 2.IDE 4->select IDE and press enter. 5-> go to exit tab and select save and exit 6-> now try installing xp pro!!

The standard machine only allows SCSI, (no IDE or SATA or SAS connectors...

However SCSI drives are not cheap.. so

To overcome the power issue (you will notice there are no 4 pin molex connectors, or sata power connectors). However there is a 4 pin molex socket on the SCSI backplane. You can use one of those molex adaptor cables (one connector to many) to get power, from the molex you can use a 4 pin to SATA power connector.

Next step is to decide the drive you want to use. I personally use SCSI, SATA, SAS and IDE in mine (overkill I know).

Cheapness says use IDE or SATA. You can get a pci IDE/SATA controller card on ebay dirt cheap (PCI cards are compatible with the large PCIX slots), they dont take the entire "socket" up but they work (be carefull here, there is one 5v pci socket on these machines, and 6 pcix sockets, the pcix sockets will accept 3.3v pci cards (look at the notches).

Next you have to mount them, with a bit of jiggery pokery you can feed the IDE/SATA cables past the SCSI backplane into the hot swap bay. (If you dont have any empty caddy's pick them up off ebay), just remember you cant just pull em out like you can with the SCSI's!) - or use one of the 5 1/2 media bays.

Plud the other ends into the appropriate controller card (as installed in the PCI bus).

Load up the OS, install drivers (if needed - these should come with the pci card(s), use the disk manager to initialise/first format the drives etc.

All done.

I have done this myself running a 2600, with 2X U320 72gb SCSI (on Raid) 1 x IDE CD/DVDRW in Media bay, DAT 27 SCSI (channel B) in the second media bay. 2x 146gb SAS on a DELL SAS pcix card (in 2 of the hot swap bays) and an old 160gb IDE HDD (Funilly enough theres a bit towards the back of the two fans on the SCSI backplane that if you press the 3 1/2 drive against seems to fit perfectly in this place and stay there! (I think thats fluke to be honest).

Yes. you can use any mixture of different interfaces a PC. As long as you have the appropriate controller interface to plug the drive into, and your power supply is big enough to support the drive(s) you're using, there should not be a problem.

The only caveat is that if you want to boot from a drive type that is not part of the PC bios, this may not work.

Such as if the bios is so old that it only has IDE and you plug in a SATA or SCSI adapter, it may take some fiddling to make it boot properly. Many interface adapters have their own bios, and sometimes things are not as compatible as they should be.

configure the bios settings, hdd should be scsi. maybe your current settings is sata or ide. if not work check the scsi controller if have installed driver or compatible to your unit.

First is your hard disk a removable one/external hard drive? if you receive this image, then it probably means you have a SATA hard drive, and your bios is set to Raid/SATA mode.

First, go to your bios settings, then change SATA mode into IDE. This should be under something like "On-Chip SATA".

Or, you can go to http://www.nliteos.com then download the program to install the needed drivers to the xp installation CD.

SATA vs PATA: Serial ATA vs. Parallel ATA Drives SATA hard drives have many benefits over their older cousin, the Parallel ATA drive. Chief among these differences are:

• SATA hard drives are faster and perform much better than traditional ATA drives and are better for high bandwidth applications such as video editing and multiplayer gaming.
• SATA drives use a smaller, cheaper cable to connect to the computer's motherboard. These cables can also be up to three feet in length compared to eighteen inches with Parallel ATA cables.

SCSI Hard Drives SCSI hard drives are the elders of the storage world. Unfortunately this high speed storage has also meant much higher costs. SCSI drives were once standard in all Macintosh computers but have since been replaced by the cheaper SATA based hard drives.

• SCSI drives are also hot swappable, similar to the SATA drives.
• Some varieties of SCSI can be used with SATA
• SCSI drives are often set up in a mirroring arrangment to allow for instant, continuous backups of the hard drives.
• SCSI drives are still the most expensive drives on the consumer market.

Your basic rule of thumb should be to purchase a drive that is designed to work with your computer's motherboard. Try to avoid using SCSI adaptors or SATA adaptors unless absolutely necessary as the whole point of using a specific kind of hard drive is to get the most speed and storage for the money.
