2001 Sony KP-53V90 53 in. Rear Projection Television has a problem related only to the picture, the top and bottom of the screen are bowed into the middle, the video feed label and volume scale are also bowed. The screen also has 3 RGB lines crossing the top of the screen.

This is probably the notorious "light engine" problem that all of these Sonys of this design run into sooner or later. It is usually more expensive to repair that what the TV is worth, sadly. A Sony authorized repair center can confirm this.

the sony service menu can be entered by pressing "display" "5" "vol+" also the diagnostic screen can be reached by vol- instead of + when you are in the service menu the number buttons navigate it its a little tricky at first but as long as you dont hit enter before you exit if you mess up it wont save just make sure if you fix it you save it by pressing enter

Bad picture

Are the convergence controls also out of adjustment? Please respond to this same post and I will help you. If you could post a picture of what the screen looks like that would even be better.

Bows on the sides and top of the t.v. screen. The model is KP-57HW40

Have your convergence amps replaced ....by tech and all will be good.

Help

You need to have the convergence IC's replaced. A repair like this should run you about 300 bucks or so. In most places.

Picture Distortion

you have a convergence problem.. If you understand how this works then you can go into the set find the convergence ic's and replace them and sometimes you need to do some alighnment as well. Its always best though to let a service tech do a job like this as he will have all the proper equipment to adjust and troubleshoot the set Good luck
