I opened the Retouch Menu > Filter Effects > Colour Balance > OK on the picture & the Histogram appears.
Reading page 51 of the manual I found somewhat confusing as I could not find the information that is set out on that page in the manual.
Thank you for your quick response.

When reviewing my pictures the info details are covering the image how do i get rid of it?

Usually there is an info or display button that you can cycle through the different modes: Full screen playback, with shot information, histogram and RGB Histogram. Refer to your manual to find the exact procedure.

How can I get my d40 to stop covering my pictures with info (so I can see how they turned out, how they look, if I need to take another one)?

Use the up or down button on the multi-selector, each push scrolls thought the picture information (2 screens, then the histogram, then the photo itself. If that's all you want, leave it there.

Have nikon d40 camera and have hit some button that makes a screen over the picture with camera info cant make it go away.

You have selected the histogram.
Bring up a picture on the LCD display. Using the arrow keys on the right, press down - the histogram will go away.

Nikon D40, how to display the date.

Bring up the photo on the camera. Press up or down until you get the histogram (yellow graph). When you get this, press up once, and look at the bottom of the screen.
