Sold in 2006,best i can tell.
if you boot it to a linux live usb stick or CD
and it dim then its a hardware issues.
is it dim in BIOS, the brightness keys btw, work in BIOS too
even with the HDD removed. so if is dim still
then its bad CCFL or inverter .
tubes are the inverter, are you buying used parts?

why not upgrade, find a newer PC used, with windows 7 COA sticker on the bottom,.. be best.
this old pc has 0 value. if broken.
there were 2 screens used, 2 , HP P/N, get that correct.
and 1 inverter, used,
spending hard cashs $80 on a $5 bad laptop is not wise.
ever. up grade as 1st post stated. it is best.
i see the parts are rare too, even used, OUCH.
If not dIM under BIOS, you are barking up wrong tree. (asK)

get one of these. that runs (no ccFL on these its LED backlighted)

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&LH_BIN=1&_nkw=HP+8540w&_sop=15

find a pc 10 years old and newer for full support and a future.
it is best advice. Windows 7 or newer..... ok?
your PC came with XP, the 3 years dead OS.

No MS support for XP
no HP support for C300 series.
rare parts.. and a square screen.

SOURCE: Touch Volume

really? i mean my computer was 3 days old, and i have the newest anti-virus and spyware programs running at an enourmous cost to myself...the patch i got from the hp tech online help was this...

Robert: Here is the link for HP QuickTouch Software.
Robert: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37799.exe
Robert: Please do not click on the link instead, Just copy and paste the entire link onto the address bar of your browser and press .
david hodgkins: should i uninstall the current drivers, or will they be automatically replaced?
Robert: The driver will be replaced.
david hodgkins: thanx!
Robert: Please hold on.
david hodgkins: i've already completed the download
Robert: Here is the link for HP Quick Launch Buttons.
Robert: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38171.exe
Robert: Please do not click on the link instead, Just copy and paste the entire link onto the address bar of your browser and press .
Robert: First download it on to the desktop. Then double click on it to run the file; Once the installation completed, restart the system

this may, or may not work...the tech informed me that the firmware, or the original drivers were corrupt when installed and that this patch should work.

have a nice day,

david

SOURCE: screen is blank

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :- To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

SOURCE: Inverted Colors When Laptop Screen is Moved

hi
you are absolutely right.

there are basically two connections.

  1. at the motherboard end.
  2. at the display end.

any of the connector may be malfunctioning.

i ll suggest you not to open it yourself if you dont have prior experience in it.

while it wont take much to repair its not a costly affair.

if your system is under warranty it can be repaired for free.

if you find the solution helpful plz rate me carefully.
thnx

SOURCE: MONITOR ONLY HAS FAINT IMAGE, COMPUTER WORKS WITH

When you have a faint image, it means that the backlights are not turning on, most of the time, its the inverter not supplying power to the lights.
My suggestion is to take a volt meter and test the voltage going to the inverter. I can not tell you what it should be, but you should have voltage more than 5 volts going to it. Its very possible that if you changed the inverter and the screen, that the main board is not supplying enough power.

thanks adi

I have lenovo g550...my screen flickers in every 5minutes...

Failing Inverter An inverter, typically found inside a laptop computer, consists of a small board, which has impregnated electronic circuits stamped on it. Inverters look like thin boards about the of two sticks of chewing gum. The inverter and its bulb control the intensity of the liquid crystal display, which lights the screen monitor. The computer can control the output voltage of the inverter and either lighten or darken the screen. A special type of inverter can adjust the brightness of the screen by using an internal sensor to judge the room brightness, and then adjust the screen accordingly. Failing inverters give off some specific warning signs, which can be recognized by observing different screen characteristics.

Short Intermittent Display Upon turning on the laptop, the screen flashes on in the normal mode for a short period and then blinks to black. A very faint image appears in a dark background, which will be very hard to see almost invisible. After shutting off the laptop and restarting, the same mode occurs, where the screen appears normal for a few seconds then fades to black. This condition points to a failed inverter. To confirm this, plug in an operational external monitor; if the external monitor functions, the inverter has failed. b> Total Blackout with Ghost image b> The laptop turns on, as indicated by the power supply button, but the screen comes up black. The screen comes up black after restart. You might be able to detect a very dim or ghost-like image on the monitor. When you plug in a known functioning external monitor, the external monitor operates normally. This mode of display indicates a failed inverter. b> Long Term Periodic Operation b> With this failure mode, the laptop screen illuminates normally upon start-up and remains that way after several minutes, hours or even days, until it goes very dark again. Brightness controls or restoration attempts do not work. Most often, the screen will function normally with a computer restart, but will eventually return to black. Faint ghost images might appear, as seen in the total blackout mode. b> Dark With Color Variation b> Upon computer start-up, the monitor shows black or dark gray, accompanied by very faint images. The screen might have an intermittent color change, or remain on with a non-standard color variation, like pink or red. b> Auto Control Switch b> If the screen appears black, with no faint or ghost images, look for the lid switch near the back hinge. The switch, when depressed with a closed lid, shuts off the computer and monitor functions. Sometimes the switch becomes stuck in the closed position, disallowing the computer and monitor to turn on when opened. Pushing the switch manually several times can often free it up. If the switch tab has broken or jammed inside the case, it needs replacing. b> Loose Connection In this mode, the display looks normal upon start-up, but tapping the side case of the computer turns the screen black. More tapping results in the screen functioning normally then cutting out again. This condition points to a loose wire connection from the inverter to the LCD backlight lamp, or the video cable. The connectors can be accessed by removing the monitor bezel screws and pulling the plastic retainer off. Both connectors can be cleaned and refitted.

I cut it on i can hear it starting up but my screen is black can you fix it

Hi and welcome to Fixya.

I want you to try and shine a bright light; like a flashlight on the screen for me;

If you see anything (even very faint) then your problem is that you need a new back light for it. If this is the case, it is usually really cheap on places like Amazon.com

If it is still black; try taking out the battery;

remove power cord;

hold power button for half a minute;

Then; plug your power cord back in;

Turn on computer;

and replace your battery.

If it is still totally black, you may have to replace the screen for it.

Please rate this solution if it was helpful. It doesn't cost anything, only takes a minute and is greatly appreciated!

Image goes to black on Sharp flatscreen.

An LCD unit? Sounds like the backlight is failing. When it goes black next time, use a strong light next to the screen and look for a faint image on the screen....

If it is the backlight, its a service shop issue.

My laptop is a Toshiba satellite and after i login a black screen

Hi there. If you've had the laptop under a year, then you can take it back to the place where you bought it, and they can take a look. If anything's wrong, then it can be fixed under the manufacturer's warranty, which is normally for 12 months from purchase.

One thing I'd like to ask, can you see anything behind the black screen? I ask this, as I had a friend who had similar problem, but it was a faint black, with the cursor flashing, and he could faintly see the desktop in the background. I was wondering if this was the same for you.

Laptop troubleshooting

When it turns black take a flashlight and shine it on the bottom of the screen where the start button would be. Look closely and see if you can seen any faint images there. If you do then your backlight is malfunction. That typically is not a self-fix for the typical user. If you don't see anything can you give us some more information. - Are any lights flashing just before or after the screen turn black? - If you restart the computer will it work again? - Will the screen go black even if you are actively working on the computer? If its not the backlight let us know the answer to these questions and we'll continue. As always please don't forget to rate this posting.
