Might need to reset the lamp life counter in the machine. See the operating manual on bulb replacement section. The instruction should be right after this section.

My monitor goes for 3 seconds black, every 1 minute

First thing, try to connect the monitor to another CPU and see if its gonna work. If it doesn't, then this might be a capacitor failure. One of the capacitors in your monitor that are responsible for holding up power for proper display is faulty. A faulty capacitor is either bulged(with a hump head) or burst. This causes the monitor to go off a few seconds after you switch it on because the capacitors can no longer hold power long enough for your display. One way to work this around is to take your monitor to a Computer Technician to open it up and probably replace the faulty capacitors

Hi, According to your problem, Check the adjust switches and readjust the monitor first. You have to repair the PCB of the monitor. Better if you can replace the PCB of the monitor.

My monitor occasionally blacks out. I turn just the monitor on -- wait a few minutes then it works ok for a while until it blacks out again

There are controls that turn off the monitor, both in Windows control panel and the monitor itself. The system should know if activity is happening, and should not blank if active.
Look at screen savers, too.

Monitor Screen goes black every few seconds!

Check the capacitors on your monitors circuit board. If they have opened up at the top, they are fried. Buy new ones, make sure nothing has leaked from the old ones, and replace them.

How to connect to external monitor?

You need to determine the fault first.
Can you determine exactly where the boom came from (the adapter or laptop)?
When you turn on your laptop does the LED lights indicating that there is power to the laptop and you can hear the hard drive spinning as well as the fan?
Do you know the power adapter is OK (you can test it with a multimeter)?
If the laptop is dead then the external monitor is of no use.

The laptop normally has a blue video output connector, usually on the back edge of the laptop where you can connect an external monitor or a data projector. When a monitor or projector is powered up first and then the laptop the display goes to the external video first. You can switch between the laptop screen and external video by clicking the blue Fn + F4 function keys.

Black screen

One way to test it is to connect a monitor to the VGA port (make sure to activate the external monitor (Fn+monitor key)
If it does work on the external monitor, I would look at replacing the onboard LCD.
If it doesn't, you are looking at problems with the onbaord video.
