Once you have the self-timer set, start it by pressing the shutter release button as usual. The camera will focus, meter the exposure, then delay for ten seconds before firing the shutter.

To get it to instantly take the picture, you must press the button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus (it will beep)...then when the moment is right, press the rest of the way.
After the focus is confirmed, the Shutter-release time lag for the DiMAGE E201 is approximately 0.4 second. If the shutter-release button is depressed in a quick motion without making any pause to confirm focus, approximately 1.9 second is necessary.

AF single or AF continuous can be selected. In AF single mode, focus is calculated and set when the shutter-release button is pressed partway down. This mode is mainly useful for a stationary subject. In AF continuous mode, camera continues to focus on a moving subject even when the shutter-release button is pressed partway down. It is convenient to capture the moving subject. Full Time AF that continues focusing without pressing the shutter-release button can be used in both AF modes.
Full-time AF starts focusing when turned on and continues focusing without the shutter-release button pressed. This is usable to shorten the focusing time and to catch the moment. Continuous AF continues focusing while pressing the shutter release button partway down without focus lock.
