Brother DCP-135C - "Init unable AF"

I have a Brother DCP-135C. After I removed a paper jam completely, the printer continues to malfunction - when restarted it makes an unhealthy sounding rapid stuttering sound, as if a motor were jammed in someway, and the LCD display reads "Please wait". This stops after about 10 seconds, and I get the LCD message "Init Unable AF". I'm then referred to the Routine maintenance chapter of the users guide. However this sheds little light on the problem.
Any ideas? All suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.

Sometimes these small machines have a lock to hold the scanner in place for shipping. Check to see if you have one and be sure it is the unlocked position. If you have one it is usually on the left side or under the scanner portion where the paper comes out.

I just had the same problem, and it turns out there was still a little bit of paper under the print head. If you unplug the printer, and move the head to the side, you might find the same.

I have a brother DCP-135C with a printer jam. I followed the instructions in the user guide and believe I have removed all the paper but still get the paper jam message. When I unplug then plug it back in...

for this model, normally the paper is stuck behind., you can open the rear part of the printer and check if there is any paper stuck there.
lift up the scanner unit and switch on the printer, does the sound come from the print head side, it could be due to the print head getting stuck... the encoder belt might be damaged...
