My Samsung 1500 player will play dvds fine but on blu rays it will play for a while then just stop or otherwise say the disc is not playable even though the disc has been played before with no issue and I have updated it completely as well. I note that the earlier version of the player I have to date has never had any problem at all it seems the newer models have more issues.

Generally speaking, if the Blu-ray player is working properly and has no further wrong codecs or configurations, then it may be possible that your Blu-ray discs are not able to be read by the Blu-ray player.

Standard DVDSs are read by a red laser while blue ray DVDs are read by a blue laser (hence the name). The blue laser diode is likely to be faulty and therefore standard dvds work but blue ray dvds do not. This is not an easily obtainable or replaceable part.

If you have region free blu ray disks then they will play in any blu ray player, the player does not have to be unlocked!

Update player to play all blue ray dvd

The firmware updates for the Blu-Ray players are available directly from the manufacturers' websites - I won't be able to give you an exact website, because we don't know your manufacturer or model #. Not all firmware updates will resolve all issues with Blu-Ray playback. For instance, even the most recent updates for the Philips and Sony Blu-Ray players do not allow you to watch every single Blu-Ray - but this could change at any point in the future. Unfortunately, Blu-Ray is an evolving technology, and each studio is using a slightly different version of the Blu-Ray format - this has caused numerous conflicts and playability issues. For my money, the Playstation 3 is the best Blu-Ray player on the market - it is future-proof.
