This could be anything from a Vacuum Leak, Idle Control Motor failure, Throttle Position Sensor failure, O2 sensor failure, Fuel Pump failure, Fuel Pressure Regulator failure, Fuel Injector failure, Bad Catalytic Converter, etc. What color is the smoke coming out of the tail pipe? If it is white, it could be a cracked head or blown gasket.

Here are some common solutions to your symptoms:

  1. Inspect air filter
  2. Inspect EGR system
  3. Inspect electrical wiring and computer systems
  4. Inspect fuel injection system
  5. Inspect idle speed control system
  6. Inspect ignition system
  7. Inspect MAF sensor
  8. Inspect MAP sensor
  9. Inspect O2 sensor
  10. Inspect PCV system
  11. Inspect throttle body
  12. Inspect throttle position sensor
  13. Check for vacuum leaks
  14. Inspect exhaust system

Limited. Why would it be smoking after replacing one plug?

what smokes. we are blind here.
you must stay.

1: end of tail pipe smokes
2: or, with hood up the exhaust manifold smokes due to oil we dropped there. (common on much service)
and what color is it.?
from where.?
tail pipe can do 3 colors
white goes away fast ,called steam.
white stays way too long called burned oil smoke,
and black (unburned fuel) and smells like gas..

Truck runs smooth going fast, but a bit bumpy going slow

The black soot would be unburned fuel the moisture would be condensation from engine not being at operating temperature.
Do you still get moisture out of pipe after it is warmed up or just while it is warming up? Seeing it's a 1988 you should be able to make some adjustments to air or fuel mixture to make it run smoother and lose the black soot. Hope this helps.

4g15 engine carburetor smoking only when engine is cold

smoking from where?, front of car, middle or tail pipe.

is this your first car, or first car and first winter (white steam?)
there are 3 kinds of smoke
black , carb flooding (ask why)
white, oil, burning, take for ever to go away
white steam, goes away fast and smells like Antifreeze, sweet and nasty.

and all carbs smoke black in the tail pipe end, when cold, unless
you very carefully tune the choke plate.
so do tell? what?
